    I feel like anyone engaging in the gun debate following this tragedy is missing the point.

    There are bigger problems than the silly spitshow that is gun control

    Posit: No SANE person could possibly do such a thing. I believe this to be indisputably true.

    Posit: SANE people ergo do NOT do these types of things. I also believe this to be indisputably true.


    Experiment: Place a legally-obtained weapon into the hands of a sane person. Does mass murder occur? I would argue: No.

    Then, place a legally-obtained weapon into the hands of an insane person. Does mass murder occur? Generally no, but still a distinct possibility.

    Result of experiment: consistent factor - legally-obtained weapon, identical in both cases. Variable - sanity vs insanity, directly affects outcome.

    Experiment 2: place illegally-obtained weapon in the hands of a sane person. Does mass murder occur? Predicted outcome, still negative.

    Place illegally-obtained weapon into the hands of insane person. Does mass murder occur? Still statistically unlikely, yet also still a distinct possibility, and the likelihood increases with the added factor of the illegality of the weapon, but by exactly how much, unknown.

    Result is similar to experiment 1 - consistent factor - weapon. Variable - sanity vs insanity - is clearly the deciding factor.

    Logical conclusion is that the real problem here is insanity, not the weapon itself.

    Now speaking personally, I don't own a gun, and I actually do not LIKE guns - and as the father of a child I would NEVER have one in my own home. However, I recognize the need for the population to ALWAYS have the right to arm itself in order to defend itself against its own government, should the need ever arise (which is the entire reason for the 2nd Amendment) - and that need outweighs any amount of knee-jerk outrage over atrocities such as this, which is due more to the mental insanity of the criminal rather than the legality of the weapons used.

    In other words, I completely understand and sympathize with the impulse to cast blame, to try to cope and make some kind of sense of such a tragedy, but if you are determined to use this as an excuse to rationalize overturning part of the Constitution, then you are barking up the wrong tree.

    What do you mean based on what? In a chaotic situation like that with a bunch of kids in a dense setting are you telling me that isn't a likely possibility ? Why the hell do you think cops and other law enforcement officials have rules about engaging an enemy in densly packed juvenile setting or even other civilian settings for that matter?

    I'm interested to know what this guy's motive was. Apparently he had family in the school? Maybe his mother and maybe his sibling?

    I mean, I'm sitting here staring at a picture of my wife and kids and just thinking to myself.....if anything like this ever happened to them (wife is a kindergarten teacher and kids will someday go to her school).....I get a little teared up just thinking about it....

    Can't even IMAGINE what those parents are going through right now.
