I grew up Catholic listening to U2's early work. A lot of it was about the violence in Northern Ireland which the band experienced growing up in Ireland. It was gritty, real and emotional. After "Achtung Baby" they lost the fire in their belly. They haven't been the same since.

    Grateful Dead
    Pink Floyd
    Phish

I guess stoner rock in general escapes me.

This is all you need to know about the effect of Queen's music on people:

Agreed. But Achtung Baby is one of the top 5 albums in the history of rock and roll. They had nowhere to go but down.

Absolutely- that's the one where the music really does shine. Jackson Browne is the same- his music is good to very good, but it's much more about his lyrics to me. Whereas I really don't care much about Yes' lyrics, but love the music.

"Everybody's trying to be a friend of mine, even a dog can shake hands."

If aliens came down who knew nothing about music and wanted to know why humans are so into music, all you would need to do is play them this and they'd get it:

I never understood Jimi Hendrix. Maybe it's a generation thing.

smh at you guys. I can understand not getting Tom Waits or even someone like Captain Beefheart but Queen, Radiohead, The Beatles, and Pink ****ing Floyd?? LOL

At least no one has mentioned Bob Dylan (yet).

For me, I like so much stuff but the ones I would have to list are:

    Mumford and Sons
    Nickelback
    Dave Matthews Band
    The Black Keys
    Pretty much all country music
Any vocal jazz artist (I love instrumental jazz music whether it is bop, free, or fusion but can't get into vocal jazz)

the beatles were influenced by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos.

I still don't get why you hate country music so much.

Acts that should get your attention:
    Loretta Lynn
KT Oslin (one of the greatest singers in any genre)
    Willie
    Buck Owens
    Dwight Yoakam
    Merle Haggard
    Glen Campbell
Tanya Tucker (first female country star on rolling stone mag (when that mattered))
    Jerry Reed

    to name a few

I do. I actually play several instruments. I get that he is very skillful, but his music just doesn't hit me there.

    My question exactly.

On the flip side, I can say, Most bands on the radio these days suck, and you know I'm in my 40's.

Uh oh. Another one of Those. As in, Those who abandoned bands once everyone else started to love them (see also, Nirvana).

I'll agree with you on one aspect: when bands become huge, they can often become pretentious (see also "Rattle and Hum") and their music over-thought. Probably inevitable. Doesn't make me not love "The Joshua Tree" or especially "Achtung Baby".

I find it mind blowing that anyone would be unable to "get" Radiohead. That's crazy talk.
