It would take them being just a terrible team for almost their entire history......like the Warriors.

    A top pick...

    2009 # 7 Stephen Curry
2010 # 6 Ekpe Udoh (over Gordon Hayward and Paul George oops)
    2011 # 11 Klay Thompson
2012 # 7 Harrison Barnes (over Andre Drummond)
    2012 # 35 Draymond Green

Other than Green the Warriors have chosen above the Rockets all of those years. And Morey has selected a comparably talented player in the second round in Parsons. The Rockets haven't selected in the top ten since we picked Yao in 2002!

The Warriors also made the shrewd trades for Bogut and Iggy. Which to Morey's credit he made the trade for Harden and the Howard signing.

What separates the Warriors team building from the Rockets?

Top draft picks not # 14 picks.

would probably take Spurs and OKC's approach and pair it with a coach like Kerr

getting one superstar (PF or big SF preferable) from the draft and go for

international stars, FAs, get guards like Harden light or Curry light just not as ballhogish

You aren't getting a superstar from the draft unless your team sucks first or a miracle happens.

I think it takes both, along with a boatload of luck, and a GM with a nose for talent in the draft. Morey hasn't been allowed to let the Rockets be bad enough to get a top 3-5 pick, where you'd have a puncher's chance, and the one area where he's definitely up and down using his metrics is the draft. His success rate is around the batting average of the 8th dude penciled into a baseball team's lineup.

exactly that but you can semi control how many years you suck

If you do it right, you suck ''only'' couple of years

I am sure the Spurs sucked only 1 or 2 seasons and then they got Duncan

And the Warriors sucked for the vast majority of the last 20 years and that's how they built their team, only in rare situations can you go the "sucking" route and it end up only taking a few years.

Like Deckard said, you kind of need to suck AND have a ton of luck to miracle your way into a superstar player in the draft. You could end up sucking a really long time if you don't suck at the right time or if you miss.

It would take Les over-paying which is something he's not willing to do.

One thing I would actually like to see would be for Morey to buy some more picks this year, maybe from Boston if their are selling some of their 8 picks. I just hope trying to get 2 Max players doesn't eliminate that option.

The Rockets really need some good depth, and players coming in on the 2016 rookie contracts, especially the 1st rounders, could be extremely cheap contributors for the team going forward with cap exploding and the CBA being redone in 2017.

Remember the Championship runs had Cassell and Horry in the 1st/2nd years. Even Elie and Herrera had only played 3-4 years.

Not that I want Jeremy Lin but he has a team option for 2.2 million dollars. With the Rockets lack of depth behind Beverly, if the Rockets traded someone like Brewer for him, you could kill two birds with one stone. You would create needed cap space to sign Horford and Durant plus you would get a back up PG. As much as a don't like Lin, he is better than Jason Terry.

Of course, what a major ass whip it would be to have to deal with all of the damn JOFs again.

    Bro...

Lin has a player option, he will be a free agent. With that being said, you seriously believe the Hornets would trade us Lin on a dirt cheap deal for Brewer even if or was a team option? Brewer will likely have to be packaged with assets to be dumped for nothing and Lin would be a positive asset him self, there will be no 2 birds one stone deal with Brewer.

If Lin comes to Houston, it will likely be on a big deal similar to what he signed last time with Houston.

Remember guys, the big negative of "Lin fans" means nothing to Les, organization or team. In fact it's a positive because of the money he brings in through sales, views etc.

true, he has a player option. I don't keep up with him all that much. More than anything I was just using him as an example. Personally I don't think Lin is seen as all that valuable around the league which his current contract of 2.2 million kind of supports. He's better than JET but certainly isn't someone of note anymore.

Additionally, don't be surprised if there are teams around the league that value Brewer more than you. He is a 9 year veteran of the league, some teams may chose to look at his entire body of work instead just last season when determining has value. Add the fact that 7 mil a season is not a bad contract in the current salary cap environment.

At 8.3 million, Jeremy Lins contract was a much bigger albatross than Brewers contract is now.

Elie was drafted in 1985. He didn't make an NBA team and played all over the world in various leagues for 5 years before finally making an NBA team in 1990. By the time that we won the title in 1994 he was 31 years old.
