We should have never gone there. We probably shouldn't have dismantled Saddam's army. We should have definitely found better soldiers. It doesn't matter how fancy the guns you give someone you need people willing to use them. Unfortunately it looks the AQ does a better job of finding soldiers.

Very true but unfortunately not unprecedented. The US helped to arm and support the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan but later many of them ended up becoming the Taliban. The US tacitly supported Saddam Hussein in the Iran - Iraq war and gave him aid. Manuel Noreiga had been a staunch US ally and the US helped to arm him and also depose him and his regime in 1989.

So you want to leave troops their indefinitely? That is not a viable solution.

"I think we may well have some kind of presence there over a period of time. The level of activity that we see today from a military standpoint, I think, will clearly decline. I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency."

It's like when Tony Stark realized Obadiah Stane was selling Stark Industries weapons to the terrorists.

Here's to hoping Obama has an Iron Man suit so he can save us.

How is that not a viable solution? It's been done numerous times before with success....

dont forget that reagan also covertly armed iran in the same war and then used profits from those sales to fund terrorism in latin america.

there is definitely a pattern wrt our foreign policy and it often comes back to bite us in the ass...but at least the military industrial complex gets theirs.

The insurgency was in fact in decline

    until Obama's actions

Romney's plan was much smarter and responsible -- to leave a small stabilizing force in place. Obama just didn't think it through deeply enough.

Well I don't think it's that Obama didn't think it through, it's that he was listening to the ignorant masses and the infant Iraqi government (who was apparently planning on never giving up power).

I suppose we'll never know, but things certainly appeared like they were winding down....then the teacher left the room and it was anarchy.

What did you want to do, ask them for the weapons they stole back, then bomb them?

Dead on. Now we are stuck with the old saying: You broke it, you bought it. The U.S. will continue paying for what they broke for a very long time. The pipe dream of bringing democracy to a country like Iraq remains a pipe dream. Now it's time to break it in pieces and salvage what can be saved, like Kurdistan.

it's incredibly ironic that you would assign the role of teacher to the United States military. I would rather think a lot would have to be learned from this debacle.

like problems that stem from a bloody occupation often don't get solved by continuing said bloody occupation
