He posted an article without comment. Something you have done a bunch.

I agree with you.... the question is, what is the tipping point? Few call for the Catholic Church to be banned, but horrible things at different times have been done in it's name. A majority of Nazi's harmed no one, yet there has been a call to ban them. It is a debate because no one can articulate a common belief as to how much is too much violence.

To ban Islam in the USA would simply be unamerican and would be a shameful day. I do not belief any ideology should be banned here.. but every national culture is different.

I think we can debate it all day long. I don't agree with banning the Nazi party in America, or banning the Catholic church, or Islam. I'm with you that no ideology should be banned here.

Most violence and terrorism in the world is still the result over battles over land, territory and control of governments.

Even knowing that, I don't think the solution is to ban governments and have a chaotic anarchy everywhere.

Actually the Islamists would fit there.

    How ironic.

After reading the OP, I was surprised by the amount of tactical, defensive posts that filled the first page.

I'm concerned if anyone didn't feel a bit of outrage towards the attackers when reading this write-up.

Very loosely coordinated, if at all. I'm no expert on the subject, but my understanding from what I've read/heard is that these various terrorist cells have some limited form of communication but its not like there's a central command planning/funding everything.

Unfortunately islasm has become a cloak for political differences. for economic strife as in the case of the kenyan mall shooting. i wish that the thread could have turned into a discussion of the displaced youth that make up the organizatio. those kids were probably driven more by poverty than religion

The human being is a violent creature by nature, religion or no religion. In totality I believe that religion makes us more peaceful, therefore is a net benefit. Unfortunately we work with incentives, religion gives people that, an incentive to do/be good. Take this away and I think the world will be a lot worse as the incentive is now gone.

ATW just look at what the responders to this thread are saying. The problem isn't Islam, it's the supporters of that article and this thread. "Silence" all non-Muslims and the world's problems won't be so bad. Islam is all about peace...to other Muslims. The rest...well...

    I second this motion.
You're right. Humans are inherently violent and divisive, that's just a result of what we were when first inhabiting this Earth. Nomadic, independent, hunters and gatherers.
Religion only works to "make us more peaceful" if it adapted to the progressive state of our social issues. We freed slaves, achieved civil rights, ended discrimination against women to an extent. Christianity more or less adapted. Islam in the Middle East? Nope. That doesn't make Islam more inherently violent, the difference is the amount of power religion has over there. They are pretty much theocracies.

Establish separation of religion and government and you will see less radicals roaming the streets.

It would have probably helped if you had actually read and understood the article.

I totally agree, but nobody has demanded that, neither the article quoted nor any poster here.

Nobody did that. Again, it would probably help to read and understand the article.

Nobody labeled the majority of Muslims as being guilty of anything.

But here is some food for thought:

My grandparents weren't Nazis. They weren't violent people. They never did anything to murder Jews, like the majority of Germans didn't during the Nazi regime. But it was argued that there was collective guilt - because the majority of peaceful people didn't manage to stop the Nazis either. The defense was similar to that brought forward by some in the other thread when talking about violent Islamists: You would risk your own life if you stood up to them. Some people did, anyway.

My grandfather (born in 1904) didn't. He never murdered anyone (as far as I know). But he didn't openly oppose Hitler either. He did listen to BBC (he was an English teacher), which was sanctioned with the death penalty as well.

    He was not a Nazi.

But his city was bombed into oblivion nonetheless.

Was he guilty of a crime, personally? No.

Did he suffer because the people from his peer group did terrible things? Yes.

Now, I am in no way advocating that peaceful Muslims should suffer in any way for what the violent Islamists do.

But I am advocating that one should not ignore that violent Islamism is not a series of isolated incidents. It is a worldwide, organized, and well-funded movement which is funded out of certain countries and which gets tacit approval - or at least no objection - from other followers of Islam.
