    Presidents aren’t required by law to release their tax returns. Nevertheless, between 1974 and 2012, every president but Gerald Ford has made a voluntary release of the tax returns they filed while in office. Ford released no complete returns, but released 10 years of summary data including gross income, taxable income, major deductions, and taxes paid.

    So at best, Mr. Trump is defying an American tradition, at worst he's hiding tax law violations.

    Ironically this issue is connected to my business owners thread. Business owners income is their business. Its unique to have a business owner run for president

    All of incomes are private unless we're public officials whose salaries are public. This is who usually runs for president so it was no big deal to provide returns.

    Jimmy Carter ran a Peanut Farm.
    But every other president put their business interests in a blind trust. They are all millionaires so they run something.

    Do you think Mr. Trump is going to be charged with illegal tax avoidance after he loses?
    (past NY State tax laws included)

    recent Republican presidential candidates, Reagan, both Bushes, Nixon and Romney, were business owners when they're running for the presidency

    all these business owners made public their tax returns;
    and in Nixon's case, one of his tax returns was under audit

    And even Carter put his farm into a blind trust.

    I think it would be a good idea to make an exception for the POTUS for federal crimes to have the Statute of Limitations clock start the first day after leaving office. This opens the door for abuse. One could easily see Trump via Bill deBARRed going strong after Obama because he can.

    "You people made me give up my peanut farm."

    If you make the choice to go into public service, you relinquish certain amounts of privacy. The People, whom these public servants serve, deserve transparency so that they have confidence that the people that they elect are serving them appropriately. This is SOP in literally EVERY properly functioning democratic society.

    Yeah, but you said that it shouldn’t be a requirement and that is silly.

    Its only been a tradition since 1972. Irs only an issue because the candidate wasn't a public official abd there is something inherently wrong with that

    Not sure what you mean by this. Tax payers file knowingly false information plenty of times which makes those filings illegal. Note that I am not saying Trump did this.
