Yep, followed by drafting Cunningham instead of Dion Dawkins to play LT and followed that up by having to make the Tunsil trade after two years of watching some of the most putrid OL play I've seen in my almost 50 yrs of watching football. You can thank RS for that.

    Exactly this.

So what happened was...we didn't want to pay Duane his money, so we traded him...found out you actually need a good LT to protect your QB...then made a desperation move for one...acquired him (trading a bounty of picks away for him) then end up paying Laremy Tunsil more money then we would have ever paid Duane Brown.

This is how the Texans have operated under BOB for a while now. I'm sure if we kept BOB he would have traded whatever picks we had left for a WR after realizing that the team missed the elite WR they had just pissed away. It's always pissing away talent and then making desperate moves to replace them.

So for those in the back. We could have kept Duane, had less of a cap hit, AND still have our picks for next year.

the first domino was calling them the texans.what a corny ass stupid name..and a long fall from the badassery that is the name "oilers"

my pick was "houston flood" and nod to stevie ray vaughn- flooding defense more bad assery..

the next first domino was picking tony boselli..

literally all you need to know about how things were going to go from there.

yes the most recent domino was duane brown. call it racist, cheap, personal or whatever it may be - the ownership is the common denominator in how they treat brown clowney hopkins et al.

this is the 800 lb gorilla in the corner. with the losses mounting mcnair had no choice but to punt again on everything and fire obrien gives stay of execution on ownership and can write off this season..with no attendance who cares and can time next coach to keep interest..if you look at all things you from "how does this insulate mcnair?" whether it was bob sr or this cal guy ...look at rick smif..look at how conserviak and smif were scapegoated and used to insulate mcnair..
then can scapegoat smif then gaine and... godsey.. and now scapegoat obrien.

once you look at it from vein of ownership every move looks obvious. truth told yet again ownership sneaks by in this..

this is the most stale.. boring ..corporate construct of a team ever....

the organization prides itself on this pr win and the stupidity of the fan base. and to be honest they are correct. the 610 am radio station is its propaganda arm and even for a second I too fell for the notion of david johnson and quick twitch.. cmon..

the optics and PR game has allowed 1 -6 or whatever it is and still able to say "next year when we get or coach"
its all timed out they will likely do it around the virus and season tickets push. if virus stays I wouldnt put it past them to not even have a coach..think about it
.no gm before anyway....now they can run true skeleton staff ..no gm.. coach or anything and have this easterby dude quoting bible verses. they can sell this as a best practice business process to the other teams. texans are poster child in industry for squeezing optics and best practice cost savings all showboated to other owners in dick measure contests..

" how much do you spend on coach and gm vs revenue and other cost of goods? haha look at OUR costs!!"

this is all for balance sheet boasts and leading the league there..its not about wins and losses on the field and NEVER was .its always about bible quoting tough smart texans foosball and showing that off at owners meetings. in that sense texans are super bowl champs every year.

as ive said before they would field the madison marlins if they could get away with it..the funny part is in houston everyone seems to lap it up now for almost 20 years. its impressive actually..

Saying Bob McNair "was not racist" could be subjective. On one hand you have the Rick Smith and McNair family ties, and Bob did do some great things for the community, but then on the other hand you have the "inmates" comment and then how strongly he defended Panthers racist owner Jerry Richardson before he was made to sell the team.

    Eye of the beholder.

The trade was actually a good trade. They got more for Duane Brown than they got for Hopkins. And y'all dump on Rick Smith. The problem was the reason for him wanting to leave AND not preparing for him to want to leave. They knew there was a chance of him holding out when the draft happened earlier that year but they waited until round 4 to draft Julien Davenport. Andrew Whithworth was also a FA earlier that year and went to LA. Riley Reiff was a tier below and was available as well. I think they didn't believe Duane was going to actually leave.

The deterioration of the OL started way before Duane had his issues. To me, it started with Rick and BoB arrogantly letting Ben Jones and Brandon Brooks walk thinking they could easily replace two key starters. What has ensued since is a revolving door of crap interior play from the likes of XSF, Allen, Kelemente, Fulton, Martin, Sharping, etc...To this day, the interior OL might be the single biggest issue on the team.

And we've seen this all too often with that front office trying to pro bowl caliber starters like Bouye, Brown, Honey Badger, Clowney, Hopkins, Reader...with the likes of Davenport, Gipson, Dunn, Cobb, etc...And no we could not have paid them all but what do we have to show for it, cap hell and almost zero draft capital.

He was top 3-5 however you want to look at it, but this was a big loss for a team that had a star QB and ended up giving away its future for his replacement.

Agreed 100%. It took us two first round picks and years of shitty OL play to find his replacement. Set us back YEARS!

    True

To be fair though DB liked playing for BOB and BOB had nothing to do with DB wanting to be traded. DB being traded was at the direct order of Bob McNair due to the inmates/asylum comment and DB's kneeling stance.

There would've been no need for the Tunsil trade after the DB trade if RS had only drafted Dion Dawkins or another LT after the DB trade instead of drafting Cunningham. Those 2 simple mistakes are what have lead the Texans to where they are today. This depends on how you feel about the Watson trade also and whether he's a championship level QB. So it's really three moves that were made that depending on how you feel set this franchise back for the next 4-6 yrs.

Very well said. In a nutshell this team has traded away or allowed to leave all of their best players while drafting bust after bust compounded with terrible FA signings and overpaying their own mediocre players.

Blame it on BOB or Easterby or whoever but the last several years has been the worst roster and cap mismanagement I’ve ever seen.

A big part was BoB staying loyal to Mike Devlin as well. Allen, Kelemente and Fulton were seemingly good signings at first but none of them played up to billing. Also developing just one of XSF, Davenport, or Rankin into a serviceable player would’ve helped us stay on schedule a bit. And for the money, Nick Martin is just abysmal.

At one point last night, Brown was providing the lead block for Hyde's tightrope TD. As a Texans fan, all you could do was shake your head.

So basically we traded Duane Brown, 2 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick for Laramie Tunsil, Kenny Stills, Martinas Rankin and Lonnie Johnson Jr....................

Part of the issue the likes of Fulton and Rankin haven't worked is because they were serviceable at multiple positions (versatile anyone?) but were only really good at a position already occupied by darling Nick Martin. I honestly would have liked to see what Fulton would do at center with the Texans. That was his best position before he came to Houston.

Remember when Nick Martin was out and Greg Mancz held down the position better than Martin had been doing?
