Attendance lags behind performance and this is a good indicator that next year there will be a huge bump in week day crowds.

What's interesting (or intriguing), though, is that we had good weekday attendance during those "July deals" days. Sure, kids not being in school helps, but I think that advertising cheaper seats got this city going as well.

I'm having a hard time understanding how they don't bring up Tyler White and use him at least as a pinch hitter and DH him some. A gut that hot right now hitting .380 and a .489 OBP at AAA who has a .425 career OBP??? There is no reason to think he could not succeed right now at the mlb level. A .400 OBP hitter inserted into this lineup is exactly what this team needs in a pennant race.

Who do you want taking the 3 point shot at the buzzer? Stephen Curry who shoots 44% or Corey Brewer who shoots 29%?

Tyler White who has gotten on base 42% of the time at every level? Or Chris Carter and Luis Valbuena who get on base 29% of the time?

We are talking PH and DH duties here. No defensive comparisons. Sure Carter may have more power, but neither factor in any speed.

Luhnow said he generally likes the expansion roster rules, the merits of which have been debated throughout the years. One positive is being able to give players a taste of the big leagues — something the Astros do not plan to do this year.

“It’s a long season. I think it gives teams an opportunity to exhale a little bit and take some of the pressure off the bullpens and not necessarily use … the same pitchers in games that maybe are lopsided one way or the other,” Luhnow said. “Depending upon where your team is, you can bring guys up to get a peak at them prior to next year. We’re not going to be in that mode. The guys we’re bringing up are guys that we want to contribute.”

For one, there are roster ramifications for bringing up younger, unproven players for a team like the Astros that’s built up a lot of prospects.

If a player is put on the 40-man roster — a player that the Astros have a long term vision for, such as Class AAA first baseman Tyler White or 2013 first overall pick Mark Appel — that’s another 40-man roster spot that can’t go to a player the Astros want to protect from the Rule 5 draft this winter. Neither Appel nor White need to be protected this winter (they haven’t been in pro ball long enough).

There will naturally be turnover on the 40-man roster after the season ahead of the Rule 5 draft, though, so the Astros can shed some 40-man players that they would remove eventually now rather than wait.

Adding a player like Thatcher is only a temporary addition to the 40-man roster. He’s a free agent at the end of the season. Once Appel is on that roster, though, he’s on it.

“It’s a consideration. It’s one of many considerations,” Luhnow said of the 40-man roster spot scarcity. “Put it all into the evaluation, but it’s certainly, you want to keep your talent as much as you possibly can. And Rule 5 is intended to prevent clubs from hoarding, so we have a lot of prospects. We’re going to try to hoard as many as possible, but we’re not going to be able to hoard them all.”

Experience valued

In the context of the September playoff push, the Astros are not inclined to roll the dice with first-time big leaguers. There’s uncertainty in adding a player like White, who isn’t regarded as a strong defensive player.

“You come up here and you stick him as a starting player in a meaningful game, that’s a lot of risk,” Luhnow said. “Not to say (he wouldn’t perform well). We don’t know what the outcome would be.”

There’s no need for Appel in the rotation, and a switch to the bullpen doesn’t seem logical considering his slower-than-expected progression as a starter.

“He’s had some really good outings and he’s had some mixed outings,” Luhnow said. “At this point, we don’t see him helping here, but that could change pretty quickly.”

White’s likely to play winter ball and is headed to the instructional league at season’s end, where he’s to be tried out as a catcher.

“He’s a good candidate to come to big league camp next year,” Luhnow said.

A.J. Reed has had a fantastic season, but this is his first full year in pro ball and the Astros’ are particularly conservative advancing position players, and the same uncertainties that exist with White and Appel apply to Reed.

It essentially boils down to being on the 40 man roster. White is not going to take many DH at bats away from Gattis the rest of the year and the Astros, on average, only pinch hit every other game. Analytically, it is not worth it to them to use a roster spot on White this late in the season. He is not Rule 5 eligible so keeping him off the 40 man saves a player next year.

But I don't think next year losing one player matters that much in comparison to what is on the line this year. I have been around baseball my whole life and I believe adding a natural hitter like White or Reed could make the diiference for this Astros team which continues to defy odds by trotting out players who can't get on base 30 percent of the time and don't make up for with enough speed or power You don't pass up an opportunity to add a bat as hot as Reed or White to a mlb postseason roster knowing what you're going to have available if you don't.

can you be "hot" without an inflated babip? I suppose by never striking out? Am I thinking about this correctly?
