In another thread, Da Dakota claimed in the following post the National Debt is "no big deal". Here's the quote. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/index.php...country-vs-divide.279898/page-6#post-10891695 I think its a topic worthy of debate. Is the National Debt important or as DD put it "no big deal"?
It's a big deal but not as big a deal as cutting the social security and medicare benefits of little old ladies to repay the debt. Of course our military is decimated, bigly, so Trump appears willing to blow the lid on a military budget that is already bigger than the next seven countries combined.
I agree with you here on the sentiment, but in order to make actual progress on the debt is going to require painful cuts in ALL programs including Social Security and Defense spending. There is no easy way out now.
I'm pretty sure everyone with even a halfway functional brain realizes that the national debt is a big deal. I mean, when you are at the point where interest alone is over 6% of your total budget per year, it's a problem. There's much better places for the 300 billion dollars the US is planning on spending in interest payments this year.
Yes and no. We should reduce the debt when the opportunity presents itself (e.g. Clinton era with strong economy). We should hold off and not risk weakening a weak economy (e.g. Obama era, or at least the 1st half of it). And we definitely shouldn't simply make big tax cuts and increase military spending (wars) for the heck of it (Bush era). Be practical about it. The goal should be to reduce the debt when we can most afford to, not to reduce it blindly without consideration of impact.
immoral? You do your best, but sometime you just can. I speaking on individual level now. There isn't anything immoral about not being able to pay. But, it's very irresponsible that you don't, when you can. Speaking of this, remember the debt crisis? People, and you know who, were actually suggesting that we don't pay our debt. I wouldn't call that immoral, but completely irresponsible and nutty.
Well he said "to make no effort to pay" not, "to not be able to pay" As to the debt crisis, the reason "people" were suggesting not paying the debt was in order to try and force the president to do the right thing and allow them to be more fiscally responsible. Usually it wouldn't come to that....but usually you have a better president than Obama in the White House.
It will not require it in SS, but for sure the military - and what you are talking about will create a recession. The national Debt is something to be dealt with, but first you have to deal with the budget deficit before you even get to the debt - maybe step 1 would be spending less money than we bring in... The MILITARY is number 1 place to cut, by a long way. Hell in the end, we could always print a bag of money and pay it off, or do what Iceland did and reset, or negotiate it down.....of course that would be globablly catastrophic......at least the first 2.... DD
didn't say there was. read again (feel like i have to say this to every lefty in this forum). I said its immoral to make no effort. I do think less of a person who can't pay their debts though.
A good read about the difference between Icleland and Ireland who faced a similar situation and took different paths. USA Debt clock real time. The Debt clock is pretty cool to see. DD
it's not a big deal when a Rep. in office. Somehow ,Democrats collect sure plus,Rep. spend it ,which is contradictory to their perspective initial policies
I see, you do feel that way even when it's out of their control? Said if someone had a car accident out of no fault of his/her and spend all of their saving on medical cares and cant pay back other debts? And yes I read that. There was an effort to not pay when you can during the debt crisis. Do you consider those folks willing to not pay the the US debt immoral?
Jesus Christ man, can you not read? how complicated is this? The answer to your question has already been answered. Did the person in the car accident make an attempt to pay their debts? Did they work 12 hours a day? take a second job? sell property? cut back on extravagances? what steps did thy take? the car crash is not a variable in this equation. what efforts have been made to pay what we owe? what cuts have been made? have subsidies been increased or decreased? Tell me one time Obama (or Bush) said 'I would love to spend on X but we are in debt and have to make tough choices.'
I'm young, so I privatizing/slashing Medicare is manageable but I am worried my earning potential will be eaten by taxes for entitlements for the boomers and then the next generation. I can take a GOP position and be selfish but I can't sit here and by for my parents retirement.
WHY THE **** should they have to do that? If we had a national healthcare program like the rest of the world, they could get back and enjoy the rest of their life. DD
'lol' Growth. Its called inflation. Inflation is theft. The rich are savvy enough to take advantage, the poor have no savings or wealth. Its the middle class the bares the brunt.
Really man? Learn. To. Read. The car crash is irrelevant. The point is the debt, regardless of how its incurred.
