For all you "best player available" people, I just don't understand you.

Sure, you're increasing the chance that you do, in fact, get the better player over the long term. But are you immediately filling a roster spot with a player who is not ready to contribute just because he plays a certain position? No!

Taking a guy who can play center in the second half of the lottery because of team need, rather than taking the best player available, usually works out, especially in the last 5-6 years.

    Sincerely,

    Rafael Araujo and Saer Sene

    :p

No way he drops past 5 though. Just too much athleticism and he has a good skillset along with it.

Bet the Warriors take him or Cousins.

Get real guys, any center we are going to get in the draft would be a multi-year project that would probably not sniff Yao's shoes even on the practice court.

This. I don't think we should draft for needs seeing how our needs are pretty balanced.

Wall, Cousins, Turner, Favors, and Wes Johnson are the 5 players I want on the Rockets. I hope the Rockets can trade up to the top 5 and get one of these guys.

I would honestly prefer it if the pick was packaged for an upgrade somewhere on the team

Yeah and so does every other team. It won't happen without giving up something of value? What could that be?

Back up center is a need for sure. I'm all for trading the pick to improve the team (i.e. Bosh) but otherwise drafting a back up center so we can limit Yao's minutes should be a priority. And there are a lot of big guys in this draft so it shouldn't be a problem.

You can always use some size, especially in the West against teams like the Lakers. Draft a big.

You use him as a trade chip or you make playing time for him.

According to Morey this will be the best draft for bigs coming out. I am sure it will be a big C/F that Morey will draft.

True, he did say that the 2010 draft would be especially deep at the power forward position. Hence, the Rockets' ability to find a long-term replacement for Landry at their pick would be more likely than in most years.

However, I seriously doubt that this would stand in the way of Morey taking the best player available.

Also, I would imagine that Morey's willingness to take the best player available, as opposed to definitely taking a power forward, is helped by Jordan Hill starting to show extended flashes of his abilities over the past week or so.

No way Morey takes a big at #13 or #14 who is just going to play behind Yao, Scola, Hill and possibly even Andersen (subject to trades) unless that big is also the best player on the Rockets' draft board at that pick.

Oh, yeah, and for those who actually want the Rockets to trade for Bosh or another star, good luck putting together a trade package including some big who wasn't worth the 13th pick. Better to take the best player available so as to maximize the team's trade assets this summer.

The problem with centers are that they take awhile to develop and adjust to the speed of the NBA. Although we're lottery-bound, we're not a lottery team and we want to compete for a championship as soon as possible.

That's why I think Camby is also a viable choice to pick up from the free agency.
