Good one last night. I read your tweets. Chuck Hayes was a big factor. Thoughts on Rockets D effort last night?

Good defensive effort. Guarding Amare 1-on-1 is key to their offense. One of the best in basketball and the key is keeping their 3 pt shooters quiet.

54-36 pts in the paint - if you can do that or close to that, you'll be right back in the game here.

Yeah, points in the paint have more of an impact than people think. Misses in the paint, you rebound better and get fouled more. Some impact there scoring in the inside.

Without Chuck, we saw the struggle. With Chuck, we talk like he's an all-star but he's not. The way he gives it up on D is so valuable to a franchise.

Yeah, the leader or one of the leaders on the team. When he was out, we struggled. Played some good teams and not having Chuck was a huge factor and why we didnt win recently.

Lets see how I can put this without getting you in trouble. Has anything on the Eastern seaboard happened of note that might have peaked your interest?

Interesting how that recent episode turned out. I do think that puts us in the game there a little bit.

But do you think that.....whatever happened that means whoever did that is out of the game? Guess we cant beat around the bush and not get you in trouble.

Yeah, I rather not get fined. We're always trying to upgrade the team. Yesterday it worked in our favor a little bit.

I know you wont talk about who you talk to but how much conversing is going on between you and other teams? Any hypotheticals with teams at this stage or does that not heat up until another 2-3 weeks?

There is tons of trade talk. Deals that are done by the deadline are usually already starting to be talked about right now. Just the nature of the NBA. We have it good with Mr. Alexander, in terms of one owner, who is willing to spend money, who is willing to do anything for the franchise. Some teams have multiple owners and often multiple decision makers besides the owner. Hard to get things done unless talked about for awhile. Things are being talked about right now.

Do people get mad at other GMs? Like yesterday where things get public, that one side, if not both, get upset about the leaks? Is there an understanding or do you talk about that?

Yeah, it's talked about to keep it quiet but almost pointless. So many people have to be involved including the league office. So between teams, the league office, and other people that need to be involved, usually things get out, so yeah it's frustrating.

For example, if Ric Bucher calls you, you know what he wants. Is it worth taking the call? They want the story, they want the goods.

So the media is like 20 year old boys who know what they want basically?

Yeah, I've been called worse.

Obviously, that's their job but we keep things close to the vest. I think that's one of the reason we get things done and teams are comfortable working with us. We try to do a good job keeping things quiet.

Clearly, less than 40 games left. Its getting to the point where you might think its not gonna happen but you got that carrot out there, we know who that is, and a team in front of you that has lost a big time player. Is there an injection of optimism as of late?

Definitely. Portland is banged up. Has a lot of injuries. Phoenix has a tough schedule down the stretch. Memphis a team we play very well. Denver got turmoil. Our chances of making the playoffs, looks better than when you're looking up in standings.

Chase Budinger's name has came up. He got off to bad start and has done better lately. Thoughts on his progress as season has gone on?

He was a guy we needed to have a big step forward and looks like he is starting to get there. I think early he turned his ankle a couple of times and that affected him. Right now he is playing with a lot of confidence.

Update on Patterson's progress?

Very good. When he went to the minor leagues, his stint was...according to our analysis, one of the best stints someone had in the minor leagues. He has carried that up to the big club. Coach has a tough decision at multiple spots of who to play. Someone is leaving saying I wish I played more but I trust coach. He got the rotation clicking and playing pretty good.

Ish Smith has gone down. What else is happening down there?

They won 8 in a row. 14 more to go to beat the Rockets streak. Players down there are strong. Gerrson does a great job, Coach Finch too. Things are going well. Gerrson pulled off the minor league trade of the century getting Jeff Adrien and that has made a big difference. Only issue though with players playing great down there means they're going to get called up so...

We do. As you know since we beat you guys every year.

One year, they put Clyde on their team.

When did you know you wanted to be a GM?

Hard to know when. I was really into sports when I was young. All the latest on using analysis to study sports happened when I was like in 2nd grade. Thats when it really started to take off. From there, when I played fantasy sports in High school might've been when.

What subject gave you the most difficulty?

I'll go with Latin. Dead languages --not very good at.

Yes.

Regarding Carmelo Anthony and recent developments, do you think it's worth it to give up 2 bishops, 2 rooks, and a couple pawns of for a queen.

I think uhh.....running gambits is good for the franchise of where we're at right now.

[Caller]: I feel Rockets have a great team. Problem is consistent D. Martin a star player, same thing Carmelo will give you--20+ points. Problem is will he stop someone?.Problem stopping someone down the stretch.

I think that's more of soliloquy. I would say this, obviously D is our issue. Yao gave us a presence that we havent gotten elsewhere. We got players who step up on different nights, but as the caller mentioned, D consistency and D integrity is our biggest issue.

[Caller]: Comment on last night's game: Nice to know when you dont have that elite scorer, you can still depend on good ol' fashion D and stopping other teams to make those scoring droughts less significant. Props to Hill, Budinger, and Hayes.

Tough to tell. Hard to get into the industry. When I left college, I tried to get a job in sports and failed. Worked at STATS Inc.and wasnt until I got a break later. Hard to predict. My advice is, dont try to do what I did or anyone else did, try and figure out the next big trend in basketball will be and have someone study that. Ive mentioned before, if its gonna be international basketball, maybe in China, so maybe studying Chinese is the right thing. Very hard to predict the next big trend.

Hmm. Clyde and Hakeem obviously the best. I'm thinking, we got some solid players on our team.I cant have Hakeem?!

We gotta stay consistent. We've had their number. Our staff does a good job preparing the guys. As caller mentioned, consistency is key. Cant take them for granted. Big game for our playoff hopes.

By "in the game" he probably means the Rockets will find a way into a Melo to NY deal where they take on Anthony Randolph or Wilson Chandler.

I don't want to open another Melo thread, since all those things are more or less connected, so I'll post this here.

Marc Stein brings up an interesting point regarding an NFL-style "franchise tag" provision, which might get included in the new CBA and would enable a team like the Rockets to keep Melo, even if he'd rather and go to New York.

Now I'm not sure you want to keep players against their will, even though putting a franchise tag on a player essentially isn't any different from matching the offersheet of a restricted free agents.

Serious talks between Denver and the teams that are willing to gamble on an Anthony trade without his signature on a contract (headlined by Houston and Dallas, as we've been discussing in this cyberspace since Thanksgiving) will also begin in earnest this week. That's especially true if you buy the notion, as some teams do, that the NBA's next labor agreement will contain an NFL-style "franchise tag" provision, which will only encourage risk-taking teams like the Rockets and Mavericks to try to swing a trade for Anthony even without an extension.

The problem there, of course, is that no one can predict anything with any certainty when it comes to the next CBA. Sources close to the situation nonetheless continue to say that the Rockets in particular loom as the Knicks' new biggest threat, since Houston would appear to be the team that can come closer than any team outside of New Jersey -- with its combination of quality draft picks, trade exceptions and Yao Ming's expiring and insurance-sweetened contract -- to furnishing Denver with the long-term savings and assets needed to start over (starting with the 2012 first-rounder swiped from the Knicks last February).

I forgot where I read it, But I remember reading that the Clippers might go after Melo with a trade package of Al-Farouq Aminu(2010/8th pick), Chris Kaman, and Minny 2012 Unprotected pick...

And if true there's no way the rockets can match that package..

Okay I found it, sorry, it was speculation from a season-ticket holder, who is familiar with the organization..

That potentially changes if the Clippers are prepared to join the bidding, with a season-ticket holder of theirs who is somewhat familiar to ESPN.com readers helpfully suggesting via Twitter on Wednesday night that the Nuggets wouldn't be able to refuse an offer of Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, Minnesota's 2012 first-round pick (which the Clippers possess from the long-ago Sam Cassell trade) and the requisite expiring contracts to absorb Al Harrington along with Anthony.

I'm not really sure what exactly your question is .

I don't think the Mavs have the assets to trade for Melo to be quite honest.

If they however somehow were to get a deal done they sure would be up there with the best of them.

Okay... Chris Broussard of ESPN, was on TV earlier and said that sources told him that Melo is willing to go to NY this off-season without a sign and trade -saying that he can make up the money through endorsements-

Meaning if we trade for him, he could leave us with nothing in return....but cap space... not worth trading any of our young talent for IMO, if true...

I beg to differ, I think they do have enough assets for a non-extend and trade (“the Melo rental”) they have big expirings with Butler, Stevenson and Chandler (Tyson is going nowhere though) + promising stud in Beaubois + Multiple draft picks + Cash. Dallas is a scary darkhorse if the Nets stay out of the picture and the Knicks falter.

You have to like your chances if you are Cuban, they get back in contention yet again, and have everything in place to convince Melo to stay for good: Another top player and former MVP+ title-contending team with great winning basketball culture+ deep playoff run this year+ best money on the table with the maxed-out extension+ tax exempt state… Gee I feel overwhelmed now.
