You know how you get a gut instinct about a player? Well, strong is that guy that I've always thought since day 1 was gonna turn out to be a damn good player. I think it will be like Slaughter and Jeffires all over again, but better. Question is, do we have a Givens, and Duncan to go with these two?
I know this isn't the corp I mentioned above, but still pretty damn good. Drew Hill, Curtis Duncan, Tony Jones, Ernest Givins and Haywood Jeffires.
My 53 right now QB (3) Osweiler, Savage, Weeden FB (1) Prosch HB (4) Miller, Ervin, Grimes, Blue TE (3) Griffin, CJF, Anderson WR (5) Hopkins, Fuller, Miller, Strong, Mumphrey OL (9) Brown, Newton, Mancz, Su'a-Filo, Allen, Clark, Adams, Bergstrom, Lamm. Aboushi gets a spot if D Brown starts on the P.U.P. DE (4) Watt, Covington, Still, Dunn NT (2) Wilfork, Reader OLB (4) Mercilus, Clowney, Simon, Scarlett ILB (4) Cushing, McKinney, Bullough, Peters CB (5) Joseph, Jackson, Johnson, Bouye, James III Safeties (6) Hal, Demps, Pleasant, Dillon, Moore, Allen LS, K, P Hunt, Shorts, Cliett, Ballentine, Pagan, Pettinato are tough cuts
Cut weeden and add cliett and Joel Heath. One takes weeden spot the other means a guy from their group is cut. My guess is still is cut and Heath makes it.
This isn't about Shorts vs Mumphrey. This is about the faulty philosophy underlying the drafting of a WR that wasn't big or fast or with exceptional hands. Sure, In the late rounds you are taking chances on guys with deficiencies in their game. But dammit, at least select somebody with one trait that plays up to the NFL that you could build around. Richard Sherman had lots of question marks before the draft. But he was a BIG corner. By selecting a no traits Jack of all trades NCAA JAG like Mumphrey they gave themselves 0% of striking gold, instead of the 10-20% chance they would have had if they took a guy with one great trait. People in the NBA swear by this way of scouting: what is the one thing you do best that will translate to the next level? For guys like Mumphrey, the answer is nothing.
Ballenstine is on the PUP and is not being cut. Cliett is not being cut. Hunt will have also make it.
Team has $10 million in salary cap space. I really hope they use a piece of it to pick of a veteran offensive lineman.
Nice list and possibly very close to what we see. Cliett is a really tough cut, it's a damn shame he's always injured. I think tonight will decide if he can take Dent's job. Scarlett is miles behind Bullough and Peters in ST and I think it might cost him.
My projected 53: QB (3) Osweiler, Savage FB (1) Prosch HB (4) Miller, Ervin, Hunt, Blue TE (3) Griffin, CJF, Anderson WR (5) Hopkins, Fuller, Miller, Strong, Mumphrey OL (9) Brown, Newton, Mancz, Su'a-Filo, Allen, Clark, Adams, Bergstrom, Lamm. DE (4) Watt, Covington, Heath, Dunn NT (2) Wilfork, Reader OLB (4) Mercilus, Clowney, Simon, Scarlett ILB (5) Cushing, McKinney, Bullough, Peters, Cliett CB (6) Joseph, Jackson, Johnson, Bouye, James III, Nelson Safeties (5) Hal, Demps, Pleasant, Dillon, Moore LS, K, P With the caveat that I think they will try to sign a veteran OL to take potentially Mancz's spot/Bergstrom's spot and that they aren't in love with their 4th OLB at all and if someone shakes out somewhere they may sign them as well. Eric Lee is also in contention for that spot.
lol @ the music. So fitting  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UA58vdYSwsQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
With our cap space, we need to look at teams like the Rams for DL help...and teams with strong OL for some help there. Weeden definitely needs to be cut to open up space for a player that can actually help us. I want Cliett to make it, I like his potential.
I have no problem with what you're saying in principle, but for this year, Mumphrey is better suited to help the team than any of the other receivers he's competing against. If you want to go into next year's draft with an eye towards getting a really sharp route-runner, or another receiver to blow the top off a defense in the later rounds, I'd have no issues with that. But for this year, and this year alone, it has to be Mumphrey. Shorts has shown nothing.
What has Mumphrey shown exactly? He'd be third on the depth chart as a returner and 6th on the depth chart as a receiver. He does nothing well, just OK.
