Since it's never freaking open? Yesterday was a PREFECT day for the roof to be open, but once again...closed. What was the point? What was the reason for it being closed yesterday? Clear sky, 70 degrees, zero chance of rain!?
I was going to make this exact same thread. Yesterday was picture perfect weather, and the roof was decided to be closed before 9AM even rolled around. I think we can go ahead and confirm that the retractable roof was a gimmick and a total mistake. Same with the goofy trays of grass. Just hairbrained ideas all around. And I hate to say it, but I wish we had a center-hung scoreboard.
I myself was wondering the same thing. I assume the roof was closed for the crown noise affect. I don't think it was a mistake though, it is always nice to have both ways  The trays of grass tough... Sheesh that was a massive mistake. I kind of wish they would do something with the Astrodome and use Reliant solely for football so they can actually put a nice solid field of grass out there and not have to move it at all.
I was not happy at all about the decision yesterday. They've gone way too far from the other direction (flashpoint incident hosting Steelers several seasons ago). No excuse for the closed roof yesterday. It's still plenty loud when open.
No reason to have a retractable roof at all if you're not going to use on it a day like yesterday. Could have saved the money.
The open roof stadium is the NFL equivalent of free to play, a tax funded rip off. And has anyone actually counted how many games per season the roof has been left open?
I'm glad we don't have some delta bravo phrase about the roof "So God can watch his favorite team play". The grass has to be mobile so it can be taken outside to grow, otherwise if left inside the stadium it will die. That's what happened in the Astrodome. It would be nice if we had what the Cardinals have, but no use crying over spilled milk.
When they built Reliant, I believe they had intended to have a standard grass field...but realized it wasn't going to be possible because the entire field was never going to get sun.
It's part of the pussification of America. Football use to be ALWAYS played outdoors. Now because of panty bunched soccer moms, it's either too cold or too hot to play with the roof open. Waaaaaaa! How great would it have been for the cold climate Packers have to deal with our hot and humid conditions?
It was waste of tax payer money. The city of Houston just raise like 50mil/yr tax on the Texans to recoup the cost of the stadium.
Didn't McNair say he originally wanted an open-air stadium? The reason for the retractable roof is due to the rodeo.
In 2008, hurricaine year, the roof was open by neccessity... and everybody survived (season ticket holders, players, hell... the team was 6-2 at home; 2-6 on the road). At this point, its safe to assume that this decision is coming from the team (coaches, players), not the Reliant Stadium management folks. I'm sure the grounds crew would love if the grass could get more sun. I'm sure the Stadium managers would save a little money on lights/air conditioning if the roof was open. I'm sure the designers of the stadium would love to utilize the fancy toy that is the roof. What I don't want this to be about is a select group of season ticket holders who have "sun seats" that don't like the sun. That would be ridiculous. I know its uncomfortable sitting in direct sunlight (I've experienced that at several UT games), but that's what the majority of the country deals with on a weekly basis. The good news is the following: All night games from here on out should have the roof open (Minnesota could get flexed over). I expect all 3pm games in the future should have the roof open as the sunlight wont' be as direct... hopefully the Texans will have more home games in that "elite" time slot with next year's scheduling.
Yeah, I've not once been to the Rodeo and witnessed the roof to be open. It's usually in the 40's then, too cold for Bob.

The people up top don't care about the players playing in the elements. It's about the fans watching in the elements.
