Done Deal: Nikola Mirotic to Pelicans for Omer Asik + 1st round pick

Good for the Bulls. Get a mediocre first round pick for a player they had to move. The Asik deal is only one more year basically.

For the Pelicans it's not bad either, even though it costs them their pick. Mirotic is a good fit for their roster.

Kind of sets the value for an Anderson dump. Asik is half the contract cost on similar years, but cost a pick to bring in a useful expiring.

I am guess the Rockets could do similar but the expiring would not be a useful player.

-Mirotic is a useful player and arguably worth a first round pick by himself. He's not expiring, has a club option next year that the Pelicans should pick up.
-Asik only has 1 year left on his deal at half the money Anderson

I think the Bulls looked at Asik as a zero factor in the trade. They aren't worried about free agency this offseason and he's gone the year after. He just matched salaries for Mirotic.

The Rockets with Anderson have more money and an extra year. He's a negative for sure now that he is in a brutal slump. Was really hoping he'd be a gunner this year so we'd have flexibility.

 

Damn... Mirotic would have been perfect for us.

 

If Asik and a 1st can get u useful player on a team friendly contract, Ryno and a 1st should be able to get u what?

Asik has one year and then an ETO, which he will likely not exercise. I pencil that in as 2 years after this one, same as Ryno.

 

So Davis is going to play center full time i guess...eh, not a bad move for NOLA i suppose, they'll still be mediocre and out in the first round (assuming they'll make them) but at least they got rid of Asik contract.

Good job by pels. Getting a quality player and dumping that toxic contract surprisingly helps their flexibility and salary going forward

 

I'd take that easily for us. Especially since the draft situation is pretty bare, if it means opening up salary of course

Makes a lot of sense for Pels. Unload unusable player for draft pick was always where the Asik thing was going to go, but getting back a useful player on a short contract is best case scenario. Mirotic can salvage this year and next year be that third big that plays next to either one of their stars.
