Rex is the best defensive coordinator in the league. O brine and Rex could easily take the Texans to the playoffs next year.

O'Brien took over one of the single worst situations in the history of sports, and was able to salvage respectability out of it for himself and the kids who stayed. I think his ability to lead men, and motivate everyone around him with his work ethic and approach to the game supercedes the fact that he's an offensive-minded guy.

I agree he has a lot of question marks - but he's also never had even a functional QB. Sanchez was basically the worst QB in the league during his time starting, and Geno Smith has been the worst QB in the league this year. To make the playoffs twice with that is pretty impressive. To be 7-8 this year with the 38th ranked QB is not bad either. Not sure how much of the personnel decisions are on him or if he was the one responsible for their commitment to Sanchez and drafting Geno - if he was, then run away. Fast. If he wasn't, then maybe he does better with better personnel people.

    Jets QB rating:

2013: Geno Smith is #38 out of 38 eligible QBs
    2012: Sanchez was #31 out of 32
    2011: #23/34
    2010: #27/31
    2009: #28/32

O'Brien and Rex would be a hell of a haul. Would finally bring some toughness to the coaching staff.

So, honest question. Do you expect Rex to walk into a situation with no established QB and do better? As a defensive guy, if we did take Clowney or Barr #1, would you trust Rex to have success with a QB taken in the 2nd or 3rd round?

I think QB is the most vital position and you take the QB that gives your team the best opportunity to be great, regardless of the coach.

The question that has to be answered for Ryan is whether Sanchez/Geno were independently terrible QBs or if Ryan helped make them terrible. If it's the latter, that's a huge mark against him. If it's the former, then I would look at the fact that Rex Ryan took a team with a crappy rookie QB to the AFC championship game, and wonder what could he do with a good rookie QB?

I will take Rex coaching, and a good OC. No issue with that at all. Will never forget that season opener.

He's probably done more with less than virtually any coach out there. Can you name another coach that has taken a team with the worst QB in football to two AFC title games?

Whether we can do more with more is still up in the air, and whether he's responsible for the talent problem at QB is unknown, but as far as making the most of the talent he has, he seems to have done an excellent job. If you had told anyone that Geno Smith would be the worst QB in football, no one remotely would have thought the Jets would be 7-8 this season.
