ZZ Top lost all their respect when they they came out with crap like "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" and "Cheap Sunglasses". "Tres Hombres" and "Fandango" (especially side 2) is when Billy Gibbons was in his prime. They were once upon a time an awesome Texas Blues band. The they sold out and cashed in. It's a damn shame.
Finn, I feel the same way you do. I always felt like they sold out when they discovered synthesizers and MTV. However, since last Saturday was supposed to be such a historic event, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt that they would play a longer show, play more older stuff, and have a surprise guest or two. Well, they didn't play a longer show, they did play 2-3 chestnuts from way back, and their surprise guest was a freaking politician. Never again, ZZTop. The only way I will go see a show of theirs will be if I get a free ticket or if they are opening for someone I want to see. It could have been a special wonderful event, but instead, it was the same damn show they have played on every stop on this tour.
Actually it's side 1 of Fandango that is live from The Warehouse, New Orleans. No studio gimmicks, just live raw blues. Had to put the album on, it's been awhile. Thanks RMTex
Before the concert, I was certain that they would have played the whole "Thunderbird" medley that kicks off side 1 of Fandango, but they didn't. They didn't play "Heard it on the X" or "Blue Jean Blues" either. After Saturday night, I won't be paying any money to see ZZTop play live. The only way I will see them is if they are opening for somebody I want to see or if I get a free ticket. They aren't worth my money anymore.
Once "Afterburner" came out, they were hard to listen to. The album I used to listen to over and over when I was younger was "The Best of ZZ Top" that one from the 70's I think.
I voted against him last time, and will again if he runs again. And I gave him a double middle-finger salute on Saturday!
That's the only ZZTop CD I still own. It's the greatest hits from their 1970s stuff, and it is the only one worth owning.
After the show, they were probably singing "Just Got Paid Today" while filling their pockets full of cash...
Wow, glad I stayed away. I wanted to go, but I would have missed a day of work, and just couldn't do that right now. Like you, RMT, I pictured a return equal to the "Who" concert we saw a few years back. What a disappointment.
