Ehh competitive goals? No...

Lifestyle concerns? Possibly true.

If competitive goals were the concern, then there is no league higher than the NBA and there wouldn't be NBA caliber players staying in Europe.

Also there are a number of US born players that have turned down more money to win a championship.

Because TV ratings, merchandise, tickets etc. work the same way for national teams as they do for "private" teams. It just shows how money is much more important than other things for US players in NBA. I don't say it in derogatory sense. It makes sense of course, as NBA is business first and discounts like Zaza's are exception to the rule (notice how Dirk, Tony, D. Green, Duncan, Ginobili...all took paycuts for the team. Only Barkley as a US citizen comes to mind when talking about paycut, but there are surely more).
