I really doubt Morey makes a deal and looks to use this years cap space (6 mil) on buying a lottery pick. Morey likes the young guys and sees them as long term productive players, doubt he gives up for someone we can probably sign in 6 months
if we can get smith at a cheap (meaning not trading our young core players), it will be a great deal. smith is an upgrade from ppat and morris in every possible way.
We can trade a first available 1st, up to 5 years I believe. Meaning 2015 (2013 is locked, and subsequently 2014, via back to back 1sts) and 2017 could be traded. If we miss the playoffs, those picks become 2016 and 18, so forth and so forth.
I wish so, but Morey is still holding on to the Paul/Howard pipedream. I've lost faith in Morey's ability to sign a superstar (NOT TRADE, as in Harden, but SIGN). Everyone expects the Rockets to get that 2nd superstar right off the bat. Look at Wade. Took him years to get other stars. Kobe got lucky with both Shaq and Pau, and he wasn't even the superstar he is now when they first got Shaquille.
THIS. unless we can give up garbage to get him. Then he can actually play this season and we can determine whether he would be a good fit.
I say go for it and make the trade. That way, it will give us time to sample the idea of having Josh Smith on this team to see how it works. If it doesn't work, then we'll let him walk this summer and go for someone else. Lets take a chance!
Morey's ability? No GM, not even RC Buford, Cupchak, Pat Riley can sign a superstar in a city like Houston.
All it takes is Smith and his agent communicating with Hawks mgmt and the mgmt of the other teams looking to trade for him that he's going to sign in Houston next Summer if they offer him a contract... then he creates the leverage both for himself and for the team(Rockets?) to A. Get a much better deal in trade and B. Give Smith a better team with more quality players left to help contend. I would assume Smith's agent is probably letting him know that now is the time to look at what teams he might want to sign with this Summer to see what kind of trades they can start to broker before the trade deadline.
I'd do it. What do we have to lose? Some years on Patterson's and Morris' contracts? Well - I wouldn't mind.
