Zach Lowe: $90M cap projected for summer 2016, $68M for summer 2015?

When the new TV deal was first announced, the initial projection was that the salary cap would go up to $66M or so in 2015, but then make a big jump to $80M in 2016, and keep going up after that.

Zach Lowe's latest trade deadline article seems to have some (more recent?) projections, where the numbers are $68M and $90M, respectively for the next two summers.

If so, this means that there is a even bigger jump in cap #s in 2016 than under the old projection, and contracts signed under the $68M scale next summer (that of any free agent who signs a long term deal) will look small in the very next season.

This is something relevant to consider in terms of Goran Dragic (and any other upcoming FA). $20M a year under a $68M cap is gonna look like $15M under a $90M cap. It also means that a top free agent might prefer sign a 2 year deal with 2nd year being player option so he can get a big pay raise in 2016 (this is more likely for a younger player than for Dragic, who is going to be 29 yrs old by the end of this season, and 30 by 2016).

Does this give us enough money to sign Durant in 2016???

All of this tells me that Harden will opt out of his contract after year 4 and get a bigger contract... So it may be wise for the Rockets not to go over paying for players just because they can. Unless they intend on dumping Howard.

I think it's actually a team, not player, option. So he may wish he could opt out after year 4, but he won't be able to.

I think you have Parsons and Harden's contracts confused.

I don't see any source that says Harden has a player option.

I see that he has a team option for the 2017/18 season which means he'd miss this bonanza anyway.

It may not be a team option, but I'm fairly certain it's NOT a player option. I think Morey's first PO was handed out to Howard.

Which side is against the possibility of "easing" into the bigger cap - a higher number next year, but lower the following. Instead of $68, $90... do $75 next year and $83 in 2016... or something like that? I thought this was being discussed as a possibility.

The players' side is against it, one reason being that lots of big name players have planned to hit free agency the summer the cap is supposed to spike.

The union is being controlled by Lebron and his ilk right now. That tier of superstars believes they are underpaid and are hell bent on getting a ton of money.

I think Harden's contract on his last year is neither a team or player option in the traditional sense. It's just 50% guaranteed, so if anything, closer to a team option.

We got him good for a good amount of time :)

The owners would have to come up with extra cash. 7 million extra X 30 teams is 210 million. Sure they could borrow easily and at cheap rates but it doesn't look like it will happen.

James Harden: Signed a five year maximum value extension in October 2012. Eligible for 5th Year 30% Max Criteria, although he did not meet it.

Final season only 50% guaranteed, becoming fully guaranteed if any one of the following conditions are met:

    a) Harden is an All-Star in any of the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 or 2016-17 seasons

    b) his team wins at least one round in the playoffs during any of the aforementioned seasons, and Harden plays in at least 75% of his team's playoff wins in the first round of that season

    c) Harden plays in at least 50 regular season games and averages at least 20 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game, and shoots at least 48.5% on two point field goal attempts during any of the aforementioned seasons

    d) Harden is not waived on or before July 1st 2017.

    Signed via Bird rights.

The way the Cap is going to look, by the end of Harden's and Steph Curry's contracts, they are going to look like ridiculous bargains for their teams.

It's neither, the 5th year became guaranteed the moment he made the all star team in 2013-14

They are already great bargains. Keep in mind a guy like Parsons is making more money. Parsons is a slightly above average small forward, while harden and curry and MVP candidates.
