My 10 favorite shoegazing records, regardless of the era are as follows: Loveless - My Bloody Valentine Souvlaki - Slowdive Nowhere - Ride (these first 3 are what I like to call the Trinity of the Holy Grail of Shoegazing albums) Citrus - Asobi Seksu Split - Lush In Ribbons - Pale Saints Mezcal Head - Swervedriver A Storm in Heaven - The Verve Doppleganger - Curve Engineers - Engineers
Aerosmith didn't have an album called Living on the Edge. That song is on the album Get a Grip. My top 10 (off the top of my head): Metallica - Black Album Alice in Chains - Dirt STP - Purple Soundgarden - Down on the Upside Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion Nas - Illmatic 2Pac - All Eyez on Me Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape Collective Soul - Collective Soul The 90s were so much better than this past decade.
Ok not to nit pick TOO much BUT they were VERVE then not THE Verve, just sayin'. And yer comment on Loveless not being on some lists, IMO it's overrated. Sure at the time it was all that but over time, for me at least, it hasn't stood the test of time.
nine inch nails the downward spiral rage against the machine Rage Against the Machine Meatbeat Manifesto Satyricon Nirvana Nevermind Nas It Was Written Richie Hawtin Plastikman Fiona Apple When the pawn… DJ Shadow Entroducing Deee-lite Dewdrops in the Garden FSOL (Future Sound of London) ISDN dam.. this is harder than i thought. the 90's was a transitional decade in music in so many different genres...
mbv was definitely more of a 'cult' group so i can understand why its not on alot of lists, but i dont know if id call that album overrated. its stood up very well for me. i dont have a favorite book or movie, but thats my all time favorite album. i still listen to it all the time and i can still hear new stuff in it.
i totally forgot about curve - doppleganger would be in my top 5. that record is amazing - i saw that show at the vatican in summer 92 and it was nuts. the band called off the bouncers so the crowd was all over the stage the entire show. none of their other albums came close to doppleganger, but ive always liked them. they were more 'industrial' than most shoegazer bands and the singers lyrics were always more dark, gothy and kind of bitter - almost more akin to nine inch nails, but w/ shoegazer textures. for those who arent aware of this band, that other band 'garbage' totally ripped these guys off in every way possible. sound, style, sexy female singer, ect. butch vig had even asked curve if he could produce them and they said no, as they had their own people - shortly afterwards he formed garbage. loved that bassist too!
Blasphemy!! Like jo mama said, every time I listen to that album, I hear something new, so I disagree with you on it not standing up. Reputation-wise in the indie circles, you are probably right as pitchfork has gone on and on about it but in my opinion, I do think the praise for that album is deserved. It's too bad that this 3rd album that Shields is working on will probably never be released.
k=s3 YES! I was at that show as well and right on the $$ about Garbage ripping them off!! Any Manny it's not blashphemy, IMO. I was there mate, not listening to Celine Dion or whatever and know the impact of that record, but trust me, A Storm in Heaven by Verve is 10 times the LP Loveless is. Tell me, what does Loveless say to you about life and living it? For me ASIH speaks volumes about life, with lyrics like "I was conceived in a chrome dream, I'm the crease in the shirt that this world wears" And this one, "You better pray when the music stops your left alone in your mind. I'll be hearing music til' the day I die" It's all down to your own perspective I guess.
Selena - Selena Live Selena - Amor Prohibido Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II Lauryn Hill - The miseducation of lauryn Hill Dr Dre - The Chronic TLC - Crazy, Sexy, Cool Boyz II Men - II Backstreet Boys - Millennium (i was a young teenager so dont judge ) Mariah Carey - Music Box I can't decide on a 10th album. Anyway...I wasnt allowed to listen to mainstream music when i was younger so I'm only now going back and listening to all these 90's music.
Wow, you quote some incredibly corny lyrics to say that "A Storm in Heaven" (aka "The Third best Verve record") is "10 times the LP" that "Loveless" is. The whole idea that you need lyrics to tell you something about life is embarrassing really. Richard Ashcroft is lame and always has been. Nick McCabe was the reason that band was good. Anyway, "Loveless" is one of the most influential records of the 90's and it's not up for debate.
Absolutely, to each his own. For me, lyrical content is not always necessary for great music. In fact most music I listen to now don't have vocals, or the vocals are there as a compliment to the instruments. That's how I feel about MBV. That massive wall of sound, the booming atmosphere. The textures and layers, it's epic. The contrasting, hypnotic, trance-like vocals are like the cherry on top. I mostly listen to drum & bass now. The same reasons I listed for loving Loveless are the same reason I'm into d&b. BTW, Kevin Shields was (don't know if he still is) a big D&B fan.
1) Radiohead - Ok Computer 2) Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral 3) Radiohead - The Bends 4) Massive Attack - Mezzanine 5) Smashing Pumpkins - Adore 6) Nirvana - Nevermind 7) Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile 8) Plexi - Cheer Up 9) Portishead - Dummy 10) Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing That was tough. I'm leaving out way too many albums that I loved. This should have been a top 50 list!
all mainstream 90's--oh well! boyz ii men - II third eye blind - self-titled oasis - what's the story morning glory eminem - the marshall mathers lp green day - dookie live - throwing copper weezer - weezer 2pac - all eyez on me 112 - 112 goo goo dolls - dizzy up the girl collective soul - collective soul sorry, decided i wanted to throw in an extra
Agreed 100% dude, Ashcroft lost the plot after the A Northern Soul, IMO. The point about the lyrics was to say what does Loveless say or mean to me in 2010? Not much, but the lyrics on ASIH and ANS by (the) Verve still speak to me in such a deep way. And come on BMoney, you have a Costello lyric in yer sig so I know that words are important to you as well. And to not go scoreboard too much on you but I know and have hung out more than once with Nick Mc Cabe and Simon Jones, Ashcroft is such a lost cause now. Be on the look out for his upcomig "hip-hop" album procduced by No ID.
I don't know but these 3 have to be included: Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind Barenaked Ladies - Stunt Matchbox 20 - Yourself or Someone Like You
Settle down, dude - I was joking somewhat, no need to get in an uproar. And if I didn't know any better, you have been itching to bust my balls - why, I don't know but that is the feeling I get. People DO change their tastes from time to time on stuff, T n F, whether it is movies, music, books, or anything else. So you were able to actually be there when all those ground-breaking shoegazing and dream pop albums were coming out - that's great. I envy you for that; I'm just thankful that I have been able to listen to them now (and you were a big reason for making that happen) instead of later. And I have never been a lyrics guy (although I do make exceptions for some artists like Dylan, Cohen, Tom Waits, etc.) - to me, the music that inspires me or knocks me on my ass are the ones that have a sound to it that you just can't put your finger on. I don't know what it is about MBV but they have that certain something that really appeals to me. I'm not saying that I don't have any love for Ashcroft, McCabe, and the rest but I don't feel it with them like I do with MBV. I'm not going to be as harsh as BMoney in regards to Richard Ashcroft, but he is on the "money" about the importance and impact of "Loveless" and you know it to be true.
