Off the top of my head--this list is extremely different than what it would have been a couple months back-- 1. Stereolab (2.-5.) The Olivia Tremor Control / Cat Stevens / Belle & Sebastian 6. Sufjan Stevens 7. Wilco 8. Matthew Herbert (This includes all the albums Herbert has produced or made under different names) 9. Gillian Welch 10. Bela Fleck 11. Super Furry Animals Hon. Men. Beck Radiohead The Beatles The Rapture Daft Punk
I actually think about this a fair amount -- I mentally keep a list of my top 10 artists/bands, and it changes a bit over time. The top of the list is pretty solidified, but the rest switches around a bit. 1. Dave Matthews Band -- The first band I was ever a huge fan of, and they mean so much to me, personally. I grew up with this band, and they'll always be my favorite. 2. The Jimi Hendrix Experience -- Could really just be Jimi himself, but I always associate him with "The Experience". I don't listen to his music as much as I used to, but I'll pop it in and just be mesmerized. Just spectacular musicianship. 3. Bob Marley and the Wailers -- The man who defines the genre. I listen to a bit of reggae outside of Bob Marley, but no one else even comes close in my mind. 4. 2Pac -- My favorite rapper of all time. I probably listen to "Makaveli" at least twice a month. 5. The Decemberists -- I've seen them live five times, and while I loved their albums, I was just blown away by the live performances. I'm a HUGE fan. 6. Patrice Pike -- I heard about her band "The Blackbox Rebellion" a few years ago on 90.1 and the name had always stuck in my mind. I saw the CD months later, when Wherehouse Music went out of business. I bought it, and I was instantly hooked. 7. Guster -- I stumbled onto Guster a few years ago, and I instantly became a fan. Great live shows. 8. Mojave 3 / Slowdive -- I'm a fan of all of Neil Halstead's work. I fell in love with Slowdive a few years ago, and then followed that onto Mojave 3. Two bands that could hardly be more different (shoegaze vs. country-folk-rock), but I love them both and think of them as one. 9. David Gray -- I struggle with putting him in my top 10 because as much as I enjoy his music, I don't listen to it all the time. Even so, I just love listening to it when I do. 10. Modest Mouse -- I'm a huge fan of most of their albums. Definitely an acquired taste.
I love Jimi and Marley, if I had a list for solo rockers Id have them on there along with Stevie Ray Vaughn
Also in no particular order Linkin Park Coheed and Cambria Fall of Troy Foo Fighters Incubus Shinedown Gnarls Barkley Dance, Gavin, Dance (with Johnny Craig) The Mars Volta Protest the Hero Honorable Mentions: Foxy Shazam Nonpoint Take the Crown Tera Melos Emarosa (again, w/ Johnny C.)
I can't do this based on my iPod because my kids use it some and three of the top ten are Disney, Schoolhouse Rock, and the Wiggles. These are the ten I listen to most often, but in no particular order after #1: 1. The Who Beatles Stones Johnny Cash Temptations SRV Al Green Joe Ely Stevie Wonder Clapton (all iterations)
I assume we're talking BANDS...as in no solo artists...off the top of my head: Smashing Pumpkins (Am I really the first person to mention them!?!?) Stereolab (glad other people are giving them some love here) Ivy Pendulum The Clash Basement Jaxx My Bloody Valentine Radiohead Jamiroquai (which is not just Jay Kay) Lush
