1. The Police (big shock...) the rest in no particular order: RHCP (the Hillel years) Van Halen (the Diamond Dave years) ZZ Top (the Home Team) Rush Ben Folds Five Weezer (holding my breath for the Red Album) U2 (everything up to and including Unforgettable Fire) and a couple of bbs "it" bands to round out the list: Explosions in the Sky Interpol (just discovered these guys and love 'em!)
By the End of Tonight mewithoutYou Mogwai Between the Buried and Me Metallica Sigur Ros Explosions in the Sky Pelican Ester Drang God is an Astronaut I'm a big fan of epic/melodic metal and ethereal instrumental music. Both genres have changed my life and all these bands have defined how much great music means to me.
Beatles Red Hot Chilli Peppers Queens of the Stone Age Killers Foo Fighters Coldplay Emerson, Lake & Palmer Aerosmith Allman Brothers Band Pink Floyd
No order in particular. I'm not including all the rap I like. White Stripes Raconteurs 311 Flaming Lips Beck Bloc Party Radiohead Pantera Alkaline Trio Black Keys I'm kinda all over the place.
In no particular order, just what came to mind first: College years: The Killers - They got me into all sorts of music The Format - Just amazing live. The melodies are upbeat but the lyrics are heart wrenching. Silversun Pickups - Shoegaze at its best. The Rocket Summer - I've never listened to a guy with so much energy and so upbeat. Jack's Mannequin/Something Corporate - Best Piano Rock out there. The Anniversary - First real Indie band that I got into Death Cab for Cutie - First time I listened to them was live at The Warehouse in Houston. Blown away. Postal Service - One of the best Electo bands ever. Bloc Party - Just fun to listen to. Minus the Bear - Nothing like it out there. Mute Math - Again, nothing like it out there. Pinback - Laid back and creative Stars - Unlike a lot of bands, their bust stuff is some of the most recent. High school Weezer Taking Back Sunday Incubus Phantom Planet Red Hot Chili Peppers The Strokes Rage Against the Machine
My Top Ten (which, of course, is subject to change): 1. Led Zeppelin -- They changed EVERYTHING, and did it with more style, more musical styles, passion, attitude, and flat-out talent than anyone. 2. Black Sabbath -- Heavy metal was born. 3. Pink Floyd -- Really. Is there anything to explain? Easily the most creative band ever. 4. Megadeth -- Despite the rather tragic split of Mustaine from Metallica, I think it was ultimately for the best. Speed metal pioneers. 5. Metallica -- Everything up to and including the Black album. Speed metal pioneers. 6. Ozzy Osbourne -- Call him solo or consider him with a band. I don't care which. Metal would be nothing without Ozzy. 7. Judas Priest -- They, along with Maiden, really ushered in a new era of metal, and Halford is easily one of the greatest vocalists ever, imo. 8. Iron Maiden -- They, along with Priest, really ushered in a new era of metal, and Bruce Dickinson is easily one of the greatest vocalists ever, imo. 9. Motley Crue -- As it pertains to metal ruling the '80's, it never would have happened without these guys. And when you realize everything they went through as a band, its almost impossible to imagine that they stayed together despite conflict, near-constant alcohol and drug abuse, failed marriages, death of children, etc. Its a wonder to me that any of them lived past 1990 with the abuse they put themselves through. Read "The Dirt" if you don't know what I'm talking about. 10. Pantera -- Rocked harder than anyone. Ever. One of the greatest live shows I've ever personally witnessed. Honorable Mentions: The Who -- Pioneers right along with Zeppelin. Jimi Hendrix -- I consider him an entity unto himself, whereas I still think of others when I think of solo Ozzy like Randy Rhodes, Zakk Wylde, etc. Jefferson Airplane -- Grace Slick has one of the greatest rock voices ever. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts -- Joan Jett has one of the greatest, angriest, hard-rock voices ever. She's truly a pioneer for female hard rock stars. Janis Joplin -- Same as Hendrix: an entity unto herself, thus didn't make my top ten list of bands. Korn -- The tightest live show I've ever seen. I wasn't really a fan until I saw them live. I went and bought all their albums the next day with my ears still ringing. Richie Blackmore's Rainbow -- Early metal pioneers. Dio's voice is amazing. Rage Against the Machine -- Talk about a band I'd LOVE to see tour again. Zach is probably one of the angriest vocalists I've ever heard, and they'll rock the hell out of you. ----- That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm 32.
And because ima_drummer2k demanded it...my honorable mentions (this is only done after you lost your over/under bet): Kate Bush Nick Drake Jimi Hendrix Peter Gabriel Phil Collins Miles Davis John Coltrane Horace Silver Elvis Presley The Beatles Jeff Beck Wilco Coldplay Black Sabbath Bloc Party Eric Clapton/Derek & the Dominoes/Blind Faith Blondie The Cars The Cult The Cure Cocteau Twins Boston Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton/Bootsy's Rubber Band Brian Eno Can Kraftwerk Deep Purple Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Interpol The Doors Love Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (also includes the one album by Emerson, Lake, and Powell) Rush King Crimson Yes Everything but the Girl The Flaming Lips Howlin' Wolf Muddy Waters Joy Division New Order Keane The Killers Massive Attack Talk Talk The Sundays The Smiths The Police Prince Red Hot Chili Peppers The Rolling Stones The Stone Roses The Who Counting every single name listed plus my earlier 20 gives me 79; so you were way off with 30.
Mine inevitably changes all the time, but #1 has been the same for a while....Here's what I "think" is my top 10 today. 1) Counting Crows 2) Foo Fighters 3) Jimmy Eat World 4) Live (First 3 albums in particular) 5) Collective Soul 6) Pearl Jam 7) Rage Against the Machine 8) Audioslave 9) Graham Colton Band 10) Better Than Ezra Lots of solo artists I dig, but if you want bands only, there you go.... By the way, didn't realize there were some other Counting Crows fans on here. Any opinions on the new album? I'd love to hear what some other Rockets fans think....
