The Who The Beatles The Stones The Kinks U2 Springsteen and the E Street Band Joe Ely REM SRV Stevie Wonder Honorable Mention: Led Zep, ZZ Top, Police, Nirvana, Benny Goodman, Little Feat, Dire Straits, Charlie Parker, Beausoleil, Al Green, and BB King. (If you went by what we have the most of in ITunes, it would be: Disney, Wiggles, and Powerpuff Girls (actually some decent songs on the PPG CDs)... the things you do for your kids.)
The Beatles, The Pixies, Elvis Costello(either as solo or with the attractions), David Bowie, The Clash, The Kinks, The Police, New Order, Devo, Hank Williams Sr. Again, tomorrow or later today, the list might be slightly different.
SRV -- It was "SRV and Double Trouble" for many, many years. He played with his brother and may have cycled some folks in and out a few times. I really don't recall and I'm too lazy to look it up, but it was a band, at least in my opinion as it has to do with this criteria. Ozzy -- he'd still be playing with Randy Rhodes, Ozzy's original post-Sabbath guitarist, were he still alive. It was more or less the same line up for quite some time (sans Rhodes, of course). Ozzy and Zakk Wylde were certainly together long enough to meet the criteria, making several albums (both studio and live) together from 1988 through 2007, despite Zakk's work in Black Label Society. Yeah, some people moved in and out during all this time, but its still a band.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, 13th Floor Elevators, the Ramones, Fugazi, Misfits, the Who, Pavement, Royal Trux, MC5, and Iggy & the Stooges (not necessarily in this order)
I think my top 10 would consist of something like this. 1. Iron Maiden 2. Metallica 3. ACDC 4. Red Hot Chili Peppers 5. Black Sabbath 6. Guns and Roses 7. Led Zepplin 8. ZZ Top 9. Linkin Park 10. Avenged Sevenfold
1. the beatles 2. led zeppelin 3. van halen 4. jimi hendrix experience 5. guns n roses 6. oasis 7. alice in chains 8. the rolling stones 9. the who 10. pearl jam
the kinks, suede, guns n roses, oasis, ac/dc, the libertines, aerosmith, apocalyptica, linkin park, the beatles. in no particular order
1.) Beatles 2.) Five Iron Frenzy (shut it, they mean a lot to me) 3a.) Sufjan Stevens 3b.) The Impossibles/Slowreader 5.) Eric Clapton 6.) dc Talk 7.) Weezer 8.) Air 9.) Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band 10.) Velvet Underground This was off the top of my head, so it'll PROBABLY change if I put some thought into it. Honorable mentions: Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Brave Saint Saturn, Queen, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Mute Math has the potential to be up way high if they keep releasing great albums. EDIT: Starting to read through some of these... Sufjan Stevens records and tours with a band called the Illinoisemakers (after his second album, Come on! Feel the Illinoise!). Eric Clapton refers to any of his bands, most notable Cream and Derek & the Dominos. Springsteen sucks by himself. The Impossibles consisted of Gabe Hascall, Rory Allen Phillips, Craig Tweedy, and Pat Elliott. Slowreader was just Gabe and Rory after The Impossibles broke up, but they only released one album. I just lumped that in.

I generally prefer solo artists (I'd take Dylan, L. Cohen or Daniel Johnston over anyone on my band list), but I'm leaving them off here. And my rule of thumb for what constitutes solo vs. band is whether or not someone's name is mentioned in the name of the band. So I'm also leaving off Zappa and the Mothers, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Costello and many others I love. Also, I need two lists as I have genuinely loved local bands as much as big acts. Also, my lists are different on any given day. Seriously famous bands (in no order): The Beatles The Who Rolling Stones The Kinks Queen Velvet Undergound The Pretenders The Ramones The Band Talking Heads Local bands (no order): Fleshmop de Schmog seximals Horseshoe/Tab Jones Lick Lick middlefinger JW Americana Keenlies Mathletes Bloodfart
Rush Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin The Eagles Nine Inch Nails The Police ... and I think my list ends there. I can think of many other bands that I like but I just don't feel right putting 'em in my Top 10 of All Time list. Bands like the Steve Miller Band... The Cult...U2...AC/DC...Creedence Clearwater Revival...
DEVO The Clash Gang of Four Les Savy Fav The Dead Kennedys Joy Division Kraftwerk Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 Jimi Hendrix Experience Talking Heads
BTW, off topic, I saw Dr. Strangelove this weekend- I kept trying to figure out where I'd heard your user name before. George C. Scott cracked me up! "I would say...no more...than 20 million killed, tops!" Oh, bands? 1. Bruce Springsteen 2. The Who 3. U2 4. REM 5. Marvin Gaye 6. Cheap Trick 7. The Kinks 8. Bob Dylan 9. The Clash 10. Alice in Chains #10 always changes.
The Police 9 other bands I listened to in high school. Where is Manny and his 10 bands plus 70 honorable mentions?
I am going to do one for bands and do a separate one for solo artists. I feel like Batman in that if the band's name has the artist in it, it really is more of a solo artist than a band. Bands (in no particular order): 1 - Genesis 2 - The Band 3 - The Byrds 4 - Pink Floyd 5 - Roxy Music 6 - Led Zeppelin 7 - Cream 8 - ELP (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) 9 - Radiohead 10 - The Cure Honorable mentions - Sigur Ros, Coldplay, Interpol, Wilco, Bloc Party, The Flaming Lips, The Who, Yes, Queen, Krafwerk, Can, The Police, The Doors, RHCP, and The Smiths. Solo artists (in no particular order) 1 - David Bowie 2 - Bob Dylan 3 - Neil Young 4 - Leonard Cohen 5 - Joni Mitchell 6 - Jimi Hendrix 7 - Bruce Springsteen 8 - Beck 9 - Kate Bush 10 - Peter Gabriel Honorable mentions - Brian Eno, Nick Drake, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye
