It would be decent to watch if 3/4 of the race wasn't about doing "caution laps" and who can change a tire the fastest. Seriously.. I mean.. half the time theyre not even actually racing. And it sucks how you have to have a commercial break during the action.. If I actually liked these races and was into them... that would piss me off so bad!!
You're so backwards on this - 3/4 of the race is about staying on the track and not causing "caution laps", and about driving better and faster than the other people on the track (that's sort of the whole point to racing). They hold off on the commercials as much as they can, they try to wait until a caution to show commercials. And in the even that something happens during a break, they interrupt the commercials to show you all the good stuff. Besides, in a 500 mile race, nobody's going to miss 4 or 5 miles due to some commercials. When the hell else would you get up to go pee? NASCAR is a great sport for watching, yet not really WATCHING - you can watch the start of the race, get distracted and go do your taxes, come back watch a few more laps of the race, get distracted again, go wash your car, and come back just in time to see the finish. And they do occasionally turn right: http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/spr/index.html http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/wgi/index.html And, if you want a silly little 300 mile race, go watch the Nationwide series (NASCAR's minor league).
I like watching it. Nobody really sits through the whole thing unless you are there. Of course, people get up and have things to do, places to eat, etc. I like to watch the first 30 laps, check in periodically, then watch the last 30 laps.
