the Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary concert Sept 7, 2001... Madison Square Garden I interned for a music publicity company and worked the red carpet... the grandadddy of freakshows- complete with Marlon Brando ranting about children in Africa getting their heads lopped off (and the crowd booing him), Whitney Houston looking so skeletal they had to digitally alter her appearance for TV, Liz Taylor and MJ stumbling on each other for support... Mac Culkin sitting in the throne next to MJ, who in person really looks like he might not be a live human being... absolutely bizarre
I miss the Music Hall. It really was the best non-club place to see a show back then. I saw the Kinks there a couple of times, once with Blondie opening and once with Cheap Trick opening. I saw Pat Travers there one time. Nowadays, to me, the best non-club place to see a show is Verizon Wireless. Although...would Warehouse Live and Meridian be considered clubs?
Is that the Woodlands venue? I'm been there a couple of times, but considering that we drive to Southeast Houston from Austin, usually, on our visits, it takes a lot to then drive out to the Woodlands for a concert. In my 20's and 30's, I wouldn't hesitated about doing it. I guess I've slowed down considerably. What was great about the Music Hall, besides it's obvious attributes, was the central location. I really miss it.
7 Seconds at Fitzgeralds - don't remember the year While watching the show from the balcony, some giant skinhead starts beating the crap out of his girlfriend next to me. His friends finally stopped him and they all left.
Bob Dylan 1994 Montage Amphitheater Scranton, Pa. Front row seats, although I didn't use them once Dylan hit the stage. We stood about 3 feet away as Dylan opened with "Maggie's Farm." Well when he sang the opening line... "So if you're traveling in the North Country fair" (North Country Girl) I raised my 2 cups of beer and shouted "Hell Ya". Dylan looked right at me, smiled and nodded his head. Awesome experience! I had connected with BOB DYLAN!!!!
Outstanding! Just shows how out of touch I am. What's the name of the Woodlands venue? I'm blanking out.
Speaking of Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion This isn't really an unusual experience but in the 80s when I was working for Bromo distributing (the Sound Warehouse distribution center) we got tickets to see, of all people, Tom Jones. We weren't really into that kind of music at the time but a few us decided it would be a giggle to go check him out. So we bought a case of beer between four of us and finished it before we got to the woodlands from downtown Let me tell you all of us were stunned at the show. Just massive energy and man could that man rock! We ended up having a great time! The next day at work, we were blaring Tom Jones records in Sound Warehouse until the managers couldn't take it any more
I have a Flaming Lips story. I think it was in 2000 when they played Houston at a tiny rock club in like Scarsborough...I had never heard of the club. Anyway, they gave the audience headphones to enhance the experience. It was pretty cool. The thing that stuck with me...literally...was the confetti. When we moved from our place a couple of years later we still found confetti in our townhome.
Great story! A friend of mine, who danced for a long time on the Larry Kane Show, and got to hang a bit with Paul Revere anf the Raiders (that Moe mentioned), was a big fan of Three Dog Night, and had like 2nd row center for their concert. Some idiot bailed on her at the last minute (she was a fox! definite groupie material, lol), so she called up her buddy, me, and asked if I'd go. Three Dog Night wasn't my cup of tea, but they ended up being great in concert. Harmonized far better than a lot of groups with great harmonies on their LPs, but hit and miss in concert. I was shocked.
Jerry Jeff and Willie - Charlotte in the late 70's and the heyday of outlaw country (as it was called back then). JJ played a great first set, then Willie matched him. JJ evidently spent Willie's set drinking - he comes out to jam with Willie after Willie's set and falls off the stage, never to reappear. Great concert.
I almost got my ASS kicked at a Living Colour show at Club Xcess in 1988. I was trying to move closer to the stage before the show started. I finally got a good spot, then this kid pushed me aside and moved in front of me. He was smaller than me. I blew it off. Then it happened again with another guy. He too was smaller than me. I said to myself "OK, the next person that does that is going to get his ass kicked". So, of course, it happens again and without thinking, I push the guy hard. Well wouldn't you know it, THIS guy was frickin' HUGE. He turned around and started coming at me (everyone was nice enough to clear out of the way so he would have plenty of room to MOP THE FLOOR with my head). In the end, he just stuck his finger in my face. Everyone was watching, so I was trying to play it off by looking like I wasn't afraid of him, but inside I was praying that he wouldn't crush me like a cockroach, which he easily could have.
Most unusual... I was like 8 when I went with my friend and our moms to a Melissa Etheridge concert. Probably about the only straight people there.
Yeah, well...I thought my whole face was going to bleed for a minute there. I still maintain that that show was one of the most intense shows I've ever seen. I remember the whole crowd 'pogo'ing' during the funky part of Funny Vibe. Cory Glover dove into the crowd and got his shirt torn off. The bouncers had to pull him back onstage. What a show.
My buddy tells a story about a Cure concert he went to when Robert Smith came out on stage and told this joke..... everytime my friend tells the story the joke confuses me. A man goes to his doctor and when the doctor finally comes into the examining room and asks the man what the problem is, the man replies I have a friend who thinks he is an orange. To which the doctor replies, where is this friend; the man replies he is right here in my pocket. That is the joke, anyone get that?
