My first concert was Elvis at the rodeo, too. We might have been at the same show! The first concert I went to that was my choice was Cheap Trick at the Summit in 1982 with Aldo Nova and Axe. That show rocked!
The Axiom later became the great Catal Huyuk and went back to being the Axiom..shout out to Batman Jones and my good friend Phil Bergeron for the great times in the 90's!
Not counting the whole family attending "rodeo" shows as a kid (Roy Rogers, Charlie Pride, etc.) my first concert was Frank Zappa at Hofheinz Pavillion in '75 or '76. Awesome.
I think it was 88 or 89 when Pink Floyd was at the Astrodome and I almost got kicked out of that concert for sneaking up to the stage.
Excellent group, my brother likes them a lot. I dont remember exactly, but I think it was Alan Parsons Project in Mexico in 95.
My first show was supposed to be Styx at the Summit in '80 (I think) however, Tommy Shaw got sick so it was postponed. So the first real show I ever saw ended up being Rush (Moving Pictures) in the Sam Houston Coliseum.
Ah. Gotcha. I checked and in 1981 I saw the Dead at Manor Downs in Austin on July 4th. They opened with "Jack Straw" (Leaving Texas...Fourth Day of July). I was near the stage and drank from a jug that was sangria laced with something funky. It took me and my friends 3 hours to find our car after the show. I was in summer school at UT that summer. Good times.
In 1976 it was either... Kansas in old movie theatre in Kansas City, Kansas. or Ted Nugent, Rush and the Artful Dodger in an auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
If the Rodeo counts, it was Charlie Pride. The first dedicated show that was for a concert was at Jones Music Hall. It was Big Country, with Wire Train opening up for them. Big Country had just released their Wonderland EP, so they were in their prime. It was a great show, great muscianship.
Except for Houston Livestock show and Rodeo concerts I never did the concert thing growing up. So my First concert ended up being Tool at the Compaq Center in 2002. Was in the General admin section on the floor. Despite Tool being my all-time favorite band, I actually had more fun seeing Weezer and then NIN at The Woodlands. I plan on giving Tool another shot Sept 11 at The Woodlands, I am really looking forward to that show.
AC/DC at the Alamodome in '96. We were in the upper deck, second to last row. My ears rang for three days straight.
I was at the Billy Idol show too, but my first was a couple of years earlier. The J Geils band at the summit. 1982ish. Freezeframe tour. I'm not counting the Rodeo shows my parents had taken me to.

Hell I sat on the stage between the monitors and the mosh pit for half that concert, headbanging like crazy. My neck hurt for a week.
