First, The Monkees at Astroworld in '88 when I was like 6. Most recent, Radiohead at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillon 06/2001. I really dont go to concerts as much as I would want to. I got the Radiohead tickets free from work.
My first and last concerts were at probably the worst sounding venue ever, the Astrodome. When I was four I was evidentally at an Elvis Presley performance at the rodeo. I don't remember anything, but there are pictures of me sleeping at the show (sorry, King). The last show I saw was Destiny's Child (after breaking my rodeo record this year with Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan and ZZ Top...I'm a sur-vi-vor!). The power of free tickets! The first show that I paid to see was the great Cheap Trick with Aldo Nova (life is just a fant-asy) and Axe (who through "a knock down, drag out rock and roll party in the street," evidentally) at the Sam Houston Coliseum...that was a l-o-u-d show. The last show I consider a "big show" was seeing U2 and No Doubt in Las Vegas in November. A very emotional show. Big shows coming up: Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, the Beta Band, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Spiritulized with the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...and Kids in the Hall!
My first BIG concert was probably Weird Al Yankovic. I don't think I'd ever been to one that big before. It was a few years ago in San Antonio. Afterwards, some friends and I were able to finagle our way backstage to the green room where we met Weird Al and hung out with him for like 10 minutes. It rocked! Last BIG concert was DMB on 7-25-01. I've been to tons of other concerts since then, but none that were more than 300 people.
First big concert: Culture Club, 1984. Fun for the whole family -- I was 12 and my sister (the big fan) was 9. Mentioned as a key date in (Nashville) Municipal Auditorium history at its web site. Since I went to it, I got to see Weird Al later that month. Way back then, there wasn't much production-wise to Al's shows. If I had made it to one of his recent shows, we could've had this conversation: Me: You've changed, man! It used to be about the music! Al: I said, slag off! Last big concert: Either Don Henley or Tom Petty, around 1990 -- I don't remember the order they played. Concerts (especially) really aren't my thing -- too loud, too many people, etc. (God, I feel old!)
I'm not sure about my first concert. Believe it or not, I guess I could say it was the Genesis: We Can't Dance tour (at the Astrodome). I was probably 14 years old at the time, and I swear my friend and I were the youngest fans there. My last big concert? Gotta be Tenacious D at the Roseland Ballroom (last month, here in NYC). Just hanging out with buds JB and KG...
drewdog- i was at that show at waterloo last summer as well. I'm a huge LIVE fan, but i love the toadies, too. I really wish they had stayed together. They were huge in TExas, but anytime i asked an out of state friend what they thought of them, i always got this blank, deer in headlights look. Anyway, i saw the toadies at Liberty Lunch a couple of years back, before they came out with their most recent album (actually it was about 3 years ago when the record was ALLEGEDLY supposed to come out) and the crowd was crazy! I literally thought i was going to die! It was fun, but it can be difficult to enjoy a show when you have to watch out for losers trying to crack your skull open and throw 'bows at you....Good times....
My first concert was in jackson hole, when my freinds found out I had never been to one, they took me to the first one that came along. . . WIDE SPREAD PANIC. . . i just wish I had told them this sooner, Big head todd and the monsters, plus Dave Mathews played there 2 weeks before that concert. this was before dave was big. like summer of 95 when the first came out with under the table and dreaming My last big concert was Dave Mathews at the Gourge. A little fun fact. my wife and I payed 50 bucks a ticket for the gourge. I would have only paid 10 in Jackson hole there are not enough mad faces for that one
IVFL...I hate you. I've never seen Widespread as I tend to save all my money for a full out Dave party every year...that must've been an awesome concert.
First: Paul Revere and the Raiders at the National Guard Armory in 1967. I took my girlfriend and I was mesmerized. Last: Don't remember. Haven't been to a concert I moved from Houston in the 80's. Saw just about every big band to come through Houston in the 70's, though.
First "big" concert: 1983. Journey. YES!! Last big concert: damn, it's been awhile. Clint Black? That was in Houston. Talk about a WHITE audience, omigod. Horrid concert experience: Quiet Riot (I'm so ashamed) Tim McGraw (I'm really ashamed). Great "": Tina Turner, Sammy Hagar.
tree -- I've got some friends who are really into GWAR...they go see them all the time. I don't know how I feel about getting fake blood and semen squirted all over me though... jungle -- I was at that Toadies show at Liberty Lunch. Also caught their farewell show last year in Austin. DaDa -- did you just say you thought a Jimmy Buffet show was better than seeing Van Halen? Okay, this is funny: First: Poison w/Warrant , 1990, Summit Most recent (Big concert): Poison w/Warrant (among others), 2001, Verizon Wireless Amp, SA
Wow, that's great!! July 3rd, 1983, it was. The "Frontiers" tour. The Summit (as I still think of it; Compaq Center? HA!) I started that same day in Galveston (age: 13). We got there early-ish. I stepped out of the pickup onto the white-hot sand. WHITE-HOT sand...man, this is really hot, what the hell...? I was standing in campfire ashes that had smoldered down to a fine white color, almost the color of the sand. My feet got a little cooked but I'll tell ya, a little Benzine, a couple bandages, and I was at that concert jumping and screaming and burning a (borrowed) lighter (i.e., encore!)
It was pretty good, but the singer suckes live. no joke. I would almost put him up there with the Bostones singer live. The concert was great until he started to sing.
That two concerts mentioned in 1983 that I was at. What I remember most about the Journey concert is that 101 KLOL used to do a rock and roll trade show called Rockfest, and it was that same weekend. Bryan Adams, who opened for Journey, played at Rockfest as well, so I saw him on Friday the 1st and Sunday the 3rd. I also saw Paul Revere and the Raiders that same weekend at Rockfest.
First: The Police (the Synchronicity tour) Most Recent: Dylan (Rodeo and Austin) If you saw Dylan at the Rodeo and not in Austin, I am sorry for you. I've seen him about 25 times. Rodeo was the worst; Austin the best.
And ANOTHER concert I was at! Wild! Don't remember too much about this one, but I do remember getting the tickets. They went on sale at the Astrodome, and a buddy and me snuck into the parking lot before the gates opened. We then fell asleep on one of the grassy areas by the Dome. A security guard woke us up about 6:30(gates opened at 6) we thought we were busted for sure, but he was cool and let us get in line. We ended up getting sh!tty seats because we overslept! I still have the little iron-on patches the radio station was giving out to everyone in line.
