mcmark, i found your restaurant. I just went there last night with my texas friends. it's called Rodeo, on 3rd ave. and 27th street. its got a huge sihlouette of a longhorn projected on the building behind it. when you walk in, you see nothing but Texas signs, UT signs, Texas gear covering the walls.the atmosphere is great, and the food is delish. i was thoroughly impressed. ------------------ fitter, happier more productive comfortable not drinking too much eating well (no more microwave dinners and saturated fats) sleeping well (no bad dreams) no paranoia fitter, healthier and more productive a pig in a cage on antibiotics
Word X110thSt! Tex, you won't believe it, but I called to make reservations at Mi Concina and they are closed for the next 3 to 4 months for renovations! AHGGGGGGGG!!!!!! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
In Houston, Fajita Flats is a good place to eat. In Austin, best expensive Tex Mex is Fonda San Miguel. The best cheap mexican is Flores in OakHill. DaDakota ------------------ If you like RTS games, check out this one. www.frontierwars.com coming soon to a PC near you.
<<I really, really like the Cowboy Ranch (steakhouse/Tex-Mex) down in Deer Park/Pasadena. It's definitely a different place... I think they're in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the restaurant with the most signs or something. (they all kinds of crap there for like no reason, but it's pretty cool...>> Good call on this place. If you have a visitor from out of town this is a good place to soak up some cliche Texas ambiance. The bar is one from the great Galvez Hotel in Galveston (one Clark Gable frequented there more than a few times.). One also has the option of dining in an actual jail cell from from the old Pasedena court house. And the food, she is bueno! -Elvis! ------------------

This is a great topic. I'll need a little help here, because my memory is bad. I used to go to Taco Cabana all the time for lunch. Original Ninfa's when we went out for Mex dinner. Here's where I need the help. We used to often eat at a place called the Mexicatessan. It was a little bitty place I believe just north of the loop. There were a couple of little tables if you wanted to eat there and it was authentic. Anybody know of it or can look in a phone book? In Austin, there was a place called Antonio's that had wonderful chalupas that covered your plate. This was in '73. Anybody know of that or remember that place? ------------------
Moe was it around Little York and 45? I think I know where you're talking about. I used to live off Main and 45 and we always used to go to a place right outside the loop off of Little York. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.

Not sure if Chipotle is "Tex-Mex"... just burritos and tacos, and they're more California-influenced. Still, I go there at least once a week. If I didn't have some self-control it would probably be more. Great student food... the burrito is a filling dinner, and it's one of the few places near campus that lets you keep refilling your drink cup..... ------------------ Isabel,clutchcity.net lurker since 1996 We are the girls from Norfolk. Agreed on Taquiera - even here in Orlando, it's still one of the best places for Tex-Mex around. Then again, it's one of the only places - everything else is more Caribbean/Hispanic cuisine than Tex-Mex. But they do make a good 3lb burrito for $7! ------------------
MC Mark, it sure could have been. Seems like my wife always drove for some reason & I can't quite remember for sure. ------------------

San Antonio has lots of great Mexican restaurants. If you're on the riverwalk, I'd recommend "Cafe Rio". I got a gift certificate there from a golf-tournament last year, and it was an awesome dinner. The fajitas are the best I've ever had. Personally, I'm addicted to Taco Cabana's "Beef Fajita Tacos" with Salsa del fuego. But my favorite Mex restaurant is a real dump in SA called "Papa Taco". The food isn't the greatest mexican food or anything, but it's so cheap and very good. Great toritillas, and $4 fajitas with rice, beans and guaco -- can't beat that!!! But if you're in SA and are in the area, you should go to "Henry's Puffy Taco" -- it's not outstanding food, but it's kindof a SA icon b/c of the mascot -- he runs the bases at Missions games. The puffy tacos are kindof neat too -- basically a corn tortilla and when you put it on a griddle, it'll puff up, then they fold it in half and it's a puffy taco. ------------------ blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
No one has mentioned Taqueria Cancun? Dirt cheap and not too bad in a pinch. Pappasito's isn't worth the price unless you go all out and get the really good stuff, like the shrimp brochette or one of the big combo platters I believe that place in San Antonio was called Casa Rio...I went there a few weeks back before game 1 of the Spurs/Mavs series. They have the best, freshest salsa I've ever had, and the entree was really good too...plus the atmosphere right there on the riverwalk is great. ------------------ Lisa, I'd like to buy your rock...

For the best breakfast in the world, try Juan in a Million's Con Queso Breakfast. You get eggs drenched in queso, carne guisada, potatoes, refried beans and flour tortillas. It fills you up for the rest of the day for only $5.95. Or you could try their Don Juan Taco. 12 oz. of eggs, potatoes, cheese and bacon for $2. I'm off right now it sounds so damn good. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin
