Criterion's finally coming out with a BluRay in a few months. And yes, they made a horrible American version starring Richard Gere:
Off the top of my head.... Arsenic and Old Lace with Carey Grant Roman Holiday Bringing up Baby Casablanca (although, I think this one is a bit overplayed now)
Were you looking for favorite movie we enjoyed as children, or favorite classic movie? Two different things, to me. Favorite movie as a kid: The Sword in the Stone Favorite classic movie: Probably The Godfather.
You should expand your horizons and watch some dude flicks. There are some good ones out there. Aren't you married? It would probably make him happy if you wanted to sit down and watch some with him.
Seen a LOT of good choices on here... My top 5, and I'm going to use the most common definition of "classic," is the following: 1. Casablanca 2. North by Northwest 3. To Kill a Mockingbird 4. It's a Wonderful Life 5. Dr. Strangelove Casablanca... what a great movie, and there's absolutely no way it gets made in today's industry. The movie is just filled with incredible dialoge. Some of my favorites: Berger: We read five times that you were killed, in five different places. Victor Laszlo: As you can see, it was true every single time. Captain Renault: Carl, see that Major Strasser gets a good table, one close to the ladies. Carl: I have already given him the best, knowing he is German and would take it anyway. Major Strasser: What is your nationality? Rick: I'm a drunkard. Captain Renault: That makes Rick a citizen of the world. Rick: I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that.
