Yeah, the location downtown has those desks now, still...but I think the actual location is different.
It wasn't far from the Metropolitan and the Lowe's State, on Main. Here's some photos from a cool site: The Metropolitan Theatre The Lowe's State. http://www.cinemahouston.info/palaces.htm
fatty -- i remember that, too...wow that picture is amazing deckard - yeah my parents tell me all about the amazing movie theaters houston had as they grew up here. my father was born in the 30's and lived his whole life here....i can't imagine how different that houston was from the one today.
man, i remember so much already mentioned... the purple cow was a fave of mine, it was near westwood mall which had, speaking of arcades, the goldmine, anyone?
Age: 49 Santa Rosa Theater Carousel Motel @ I45 & 610 with the merry-go-round at the top opening of Almeda Mall leaks in the Dome roof nickel beer night in the dome, "Coldest foam in the dome" Jamail's on Kirby mosquito fogger trucks King Center Drive Inn with Prince's next door - every Friday night
My first stop in Houston was on a stopover en-route to El Paso, back in the mid 90's. I remember being mesmerized by the planes taxiing right above the cars
My first memory was visiting in 1968 to see the Astrodome and go to an all-star game. Returned in 1982 for good. My first memory from then was being amazed at the parking lot that was 59 at 6 am! Most of what I remember is all the good restaurants that are no longer here, many of which have already been mentioned (Boston Sea Party was cool). Athens Bar & Grill on the Ship Channel (can't believe I survived many of those outings). Shanghai Reds on the Ship Channel. Kaphans on S. Main. Uncle Tai's near the Galleria. Magic Pan Crepes in the Galleria. Armando's on S. Shepard (the original) Leo's on S. Shepard (unofficial home of ZZ Top). Ducho's on N. Shepard. Tour D'Argent (near Ella/TC Jester). Primos on Washington Rainbow Lodge on Memorial. Roznovsky's (near the beer can house). Dong Ting downtown. Confederate House (so Old South it creeped me out). Mrs. Me, a Vietnamese dive in Montrose (shared space with a dry cleaner!) Zorba the Greeks on Tuam. Fuddruckers on Chimney Rock. Guy's Meat Market on N. Post Oak (very cool - you could buy a couple of cows if you wanted). Taj Mahal on Gulf Freeway. That's all.
OK, you old fogeys....who remembers this club: Dome Shadows It was on one of those side streets leading into the Dome complex....might have been Holly Hall. That was one of the clubs I used to get into when I was underage. I used to go see Alan Haynes and the Stepchildren play there. Alan lives in Austin now but still performs in Houston on occasion at the Big Easy. I got to sit in with him at a jam at the Big Easy a couple of years ago. Told him I used to go see him at the Dome Shadows when I was 16. He was floored!
Ok... Farrell's, check. Peppermint Park, check. Lots of those others... check check check. I remember living on Gears road around '71, which was before it changed to Greens road. Later, living in Green Ridge North, they talked of building a Mall that would be called Greenspoint. It was put off long enough people didn't believe them for a while. Moved away before it was built. What about Pipe Organ Pizza in Memorial City? That place rocked. Train Song anyone? They had GREAT deep dish pizza... and one day that got a new video game that was called PacMan. I was a video game addict forever after that. Anyone remember Panjo's Pizza? There were a few of them, and the pizza was excellent. Back before the "Conveyor Belt" pizza advent. The one near Kirkwood/West Belt had Boston's first album on the juke box and we played it wayyy too much. What about Shakey's Pizza? That was pretty good too... forget where it was though. They had those fake ragtime/dixieland straw hats there.
that place was on westheimer. we used to meet up there to "cruise westheimer" when i was in high school.
I've spend 99% of my 24 yrs in Houston.... I remember when red lights didn't have cameras. I have a bad memory.
Moved to Houston in 1980 from Philadelphia (33 now). I remember... - Games People Play on 1960 - Greenspoint before it was dangerous - (for the soccer players) Meyer Park when it was only 10 fields - (for The Woodlands people) The Wharf & Chubby Bumpkins Pizza - The Woodlands was only Grogan's Mill and Panther Creek - The Houston Dynamos - My first game at the Astrodome. Orbit stole my hat and drove around the stadium with it. I was pissed. - Alfred's Deli
21 and remember seeing the Rockets champion ship parade but back then I didnt care about basketball cuz I was like 5
I remember going to Astroworld to go to Videocity right next to the Cyclone hoping to get on TV. Baybrook Mall when it had a movie theater in it. I believe only two screens. DJ's and Oak Tree in the Galleria, movie night at Water World, Depeche Mode at the Southern Star Ampitheater. Going to the Bellaire theater for the Rocky Horror Picture show and carrying in newspapers, "JANET, SLUT!", etc. Spring break on Crystal Beach and the caravan of us heading down I-45 for Senior skip day. Mad Dog 20/20 was the devil. The old bridge to the island that lifted up to allow boats to pass. Drive in movie theater on Shaver near 45. Going into Gilley's for the first time and getting to watch the movie being made with the crew as my friends dad was the co-owner to the place with Mickey. The old Astrodome scoreboard. Alicia and the disturbing howl it made under our doors. Cruising Center Street in Deer Park when it was rated as the #2 cruising spot in the US by Rolling Stone, 87-89 I believe. Racing on X street...My Mustang GT and Momo rims rocked that street. The old Aquarium in Galveston. When the Kemah Boardwalk was just Landry's.
