There was development west of the Galleria...just nowhere near what there is today. I remember there were driving ranges down westheimer...and just east of dairy ashford on westheimer, there was a huge field with longhorns roaming it. honestly, i think it was like that until the early 90's.
Let's see if any of you guys remember these commercials... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WC5mvVXGGjc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WC5mvVXGGjc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> "...in BEAUTIFUL Southwest Houston!!" LOL.
oh my lord, ima that's brilliant. i read an article about that guy not too long ago....about what had become of him. i pass that place from time to time and it always makes me laugh. the VCR that looks like a tank is classic. EDIT: http://www.pollackinvestments.com/press/2006.11.eastvalley.php
Oh man I remember going to that place all the time! I remember the bowling and the putt putt...but I was too young to know where it was at. I might go drive by there one time just to see it lol
Eddie Angelo was my father's close friend growing up. His daughter opened up another Fisherman's Wharf under that name in Katy...it failed recently. I saw an Angelo's coming up on Main Street about 3 blocks or so from Preston (can't remember the cross-street)...I wonder if it's the same family?
it's really strange to drive by it. it just looks so run down and different from what it did when i was a kid.
Yeah, but I bet they won't do the all you can eat boiled shrimp and raw oysters before your entree, like in the old days. If they do, I'll eat there 5 days a week until they bury me in a piano crate!
Anyone had fun times at Malibu Grand Prix near 610? I had a blast there. One time, I saw newscaster Dave Ward and his children at the arcades. Now look at it: http://www.abandonedbutnotforgotten.com/abandoned_malibu_grand_prix_in_houston.htm
That looks like the place that used to be near I-10 and 610 on the west side. The website says something about 59 though.
I'm 39 and remember a bunch of the places mentioned. Anyone remember the purple cow? It was a drive in burger joint with a big purple cow on the sign. It was somewhere on the SW side of town and they served purple milk and purple softserve ice cream. Good time Charlies in Sharpstown mall. Barbacue Inn on Crosstimbers is still family owned and has the best fried shrimp in town.
And also how about the piece of property at the SW corner of 59 south and loop 610. It was so many different things I think it was built on an ancient indian burial ground or something. I remember at different times it being a motorcross track, water slide, artificial ski slope, ampitheater (my wife and I saw Rev Horton Heat open for Porno for Pyros there), garden center and probably 5 other things I don't recall.
I remember when Gulfgate was being built. That was a huge deal, especially since I was living in the area, off Reveille. They built it right on top of Plum Creek. Must still be under there, somewhere. I remember having a malt at the counter in Madding's, on Telephone Road. Walking to U-tote-M ("you tell 'em, U-tote-M!") to get a Delaware Punch. Swimming at the pool of Reveille Park. The Peppermint Park at the end of Reveille. I'm not familiar with the other park that's been mentioned. I remember when Hobby Airport was the only airport in town and was named Houston International Airport. Crystal Pool, with the plastic dome at the bottom of the deep end, that had air in it so you could breath. What a trip! You could never have a pool like that today because of the liability. Watching Houston wrestling on TV with my grandmother, who loved Pepper Gomez. Who can forget Paul Bosch? He used to jog in my neighborhood. Never forget going to see wrestling live. About as exciting as it could get for a kid. Those guys were animals! Much later, I used to go to Meyer Speedway with my cousin, which was an absolute gas. He built "hotrods" out of '56 Chevy's and I was his "assistant," lol. Hand him tools and help with the heavy lifting. Damn, he built some sweet cars. We would hang out at the old Ranger Drive-in by Gulfgate and Prince's on S. Main. Nothing like having babes around your age bringing you burgers and fries, with malts in a tall glass. Going to drive-ins as a kid. My Dad was a movie junkie, even being an usher during the Depression, while going to high school in Houston. We went to drive-ins at least twice a week, and once a week went to a movie palace Downtown, always stopping after for dogs at the original James Coney Island. Those chili dogs still top any I've had since and certainly beat the posers James Coney Island sells now. Lots of memories of Houston. Those are a few.
You're slippin' deckard. You neglected to mention any of your numerous sexual encounters in the bayou city.
There's a purple cow in little rock that is amazing. it's not a drive-in...but it is burgers and shakes. My in-laws live there, and I hit it up everytime I'm there. When I mentioned it to my mom she told me about there being a placed called that here, years ago. I have no idea if there's a relation or not.
