Right across from the Hickory Pit BBQ, which is still there and looks exactly the same as it did 30 years ago. At least on the outside.
Fatty you must've grown up not too far from where I did as I used to go to Meyerland all the time. I remember when I was maybe 8 or so I once got seperated from my Mom and just balling my eyes out for what seemed like hours, although it was probably only about 10 minutes, because I thought my mom had left and forgotten I was there. Anyway she found me pretty quickly. When I was back in Houston in 2006 I stopped by Meyerland and wow has that place changed.
There was a restaurant on Westheimer...I wanna say near Gessner, but I'm not positive....called Ruby Red's...or something like that. If I remember right, you ordered your meal for a machine that was at the table....peanut shells on the floor....everything was very red. Also....Don the Beachcomber's was a fantastic Polynesian buffet right at Westheimer and Gessner. There was a movie theater near there (where SRO was for a while) where I saw all the James Bond movies as a kid. It was tradition that my father would take me to work with him on the day it opened...and we'd go see the movie together during the afternoon.
Actually, I grew up all over the place. I lived in Baytown from 77 to 84. Then in Kingwood in 85 & 86. Then Bellaire. But I've always had relatives in Bellaire, so I've been around that area forever.
I remember seeing that preview there as well. They played the theme from Jaws and kept showing an airplane just below the clouds, right? I remember riding our BMX's there and sneaking in to see Airplane as well as Blazing Saddles and laughing so hard at the campfire farting scene that I started crying. Most importantly, that theatre will always hold a special place in my heart because it's where I saw Star Wars for the very first time. Life changing experience.
northline mall and gulfgate mall. both unfortunately victims of progress. Boston Sea Party, ummm good
Grew up in Meyerland just south of South Braeswood and just west of Post Oak. My parents said I would run to our bay window when I was little to watch the trains go by down by South Main! Think about that. Earliest memories: Belden's and Willowbend Pharmacy Westbury Square Brittain's Broiler burgers Valian's restaurant Shamrock Hotel Kolter Elementary Cellar Door Sonny Look's Windsor Plaza where my sister took dance lessons from Patsy Swayze Great thread, btw.
Oh...I remember the many-changing faces of the Town & Country area. From village shops type area...complete with Panjo's Pizza and James Coney Island store #2..... to Town & Country Mall.... with Town & Country 6 and Town & Country 3 movie theaters nearly right next door to one another.... to the revamped T&C village area back in the early to mid 90's.... and now to a more developed T&C village area with CityCentre pretty far along. And....the "Energy Corridor"ization of the area I grew up in. The biggest difference I notice in terms of traffic...lunchtime....because so many corporate headquarters are out here now. And they're all building new space and relocating people here. The Memorial Hermann corporate HQ's going in at Gessner & I-10 is massive. BP is building more in the Westlake area. That to me is the biggest change in the area of town I grew up in, I think.
52. The very first thing that popped in my head was remembering walking down Westheimer in Montrose at night and getting hit with a couple of eggs. Bavarian Gardens Moses/Rockets Summit The Parlour 2nd wife Oilers First time I got high in front of my dad. (he had a choice: join, watch or take a walk...he stayed for the contact high )
For the rest of my life, I will wallow in regret for not trying that place. I could never justify the $20 price tag for the buffet.
You grew up where I grew up and where I now own a house 30+ years later. Welcome to the neighborhood!
More memories coming back to my aging brain.... --4th of July fireworks at Westbury Square and at Sharpstown Mall. --Shopping at Walter Pye's in Meyerland Plaza for a new suit every year --More shopping memories: Battlestein's & Joske's --More eating memories: Ruggerio's Pizza on Hillcroft near West Airport
does anyone remeber the commercial where they played some cheesy "houston proud" song and showed a dad and kid running at each other in slow motion.
That property is still sitting there!!! That water park looks like a graveyard, now. I remember seeing Alan Ashby there over the All Star break...when he was batting about .300 at the break and should have been at the game....my friends and I told him we thought he was robbed. I know they have a church that meets there on Sundays...I don't know anything about the church. I represented the security company they contracted one time with respect to a fight that happened there. When they built that place...it was sooo in the middle of nowhere. Cheap land.
I remember: . The Brown & Root building on Bellaire near Beltway 8. It stood out because there was nothing around it, no other buildings, no beltway. If you headed west on Bellaire past Brown & Root, there was nothing but empty land, cow pastures and rundown shacks. . Same with Westheimer, there was nothing past the Galleria. Once you drove past it, it's time to turn back. . Sharpstown was a kick-ass mall. . The Drive-in off I-45 North. You can see the screen from the freeway. I used to go see the drive-in in Pasadena, can't remember where it was, off Spencer I think. . And of course, the Rockets at Hofheinz Pavilion, you paid $1 a ticket with student ID. I remember Newlin diving after a loose ball into the stand, knocking over some steel folding chairs in the 1st row.
HOUSTON PROUD! Proud of the things we've done together Proud enough to stand and blah blah blah We believe...blah blah blah... How about Kathy Whitmire's ads about cleaning up the bayou to turn it into an entertainment district like the Riverwalk?
