In my opinion fillers, unless overused, help create a better flow of conversation.

Back in the 90's I used to produce Educational Videos and every time we interviewed a teenager...you would need both hands to count the number of times they ended a sentence with "..so." It annoyed the crud out of me.

Now, they say "like" every other word and end what should be declarative statements as if they're asking a question.

So like yesterday? It was like raining real hard? And my friend was like, I lost my umbrella? And like she had to like walk all the way home without one?

No, it doesn't. Most of the time it's better than silence but a better flow of conversation would actually be, conversation.

Everyone should learn to speak like Christopher Walken...

Never. Any. Filler. Words. When. I. Speak.

I am not a native English speaker so the flow of conversation can be a bit of an issue. I've noticed I use quite a small fraction of my vocabulary when I speak. For example, I say "exactly" a lot but never, say, "precisely" or "indeed". "I mean" is also something I tend to use excessively. "Ums" is what I fill the silences with. Probably because I use its equivalent in my own language.
