It's sort of like bragging that you've never been robbed, while having the the most ghetto house in the neighborhood. It's not that your security system is great, it's that no one wants your crap.

IMO they both serve different needs, and trying to compare them is like apples and oranges.. I use both, but I prefer a PC.

    Great commercial.

I use PCs all the time, but my mac has just blown all of them out of the water.

I never really understood why it's always mac vs. PC. Isn't a mac a "PC" anyways?

I also hate the attitude of the commercial. Acting smug towards the consumers you are trying to sway is a bad idea. But I will still try out a Macbook as my next computer purchase despite the ads.

I read an article where they polled people on these Mac commercials. Most people sympathized w/ the PC guy and found the Mac guy unrelatable.

Bashing your main competitor is sort of a "last resort" measure for companies. It usually works, though. It worked for Sega back in the early 90's (Sega does what Nintendon't) and it worked for Pepsi back in the 80's (The choice of a new generation). It only works temporarily, though, as people get tired of negativity. Ipple has all but forgotten its computer division the last couple of years, so they have to get users to switch from Windows to Mac, rather than having the same people buy Macs over and over again.

I posit that you do not fundamentally understand what makes a hacker tick. You perchance underestimate hackers' intense hatred of of all things Bill Gates.

I still think that Apple did not learn their lesson from back in the 80's...absolute proprietary hardware requirements will do you in. Part of Microsoft's problems with Windows is that they have to support so many hardware pieces. And while this is one of the major problems/flaws within the Windows OS...it's also one of its greatest strengths. By using a PC, I am not limited to the hardware that Apple forces me to use.

As for the ads, I do somewhat sympathize with the PC character...only because he seems like a nice guy who is trying really hard to succeed. The Mac guy comes across as quite facetious. Apple would have been better off making the PC guy seem a little more like a jerk...but by doing that, you alienate your target demographic even more.

    Ads funny...yes...effective...no.

They've tried that for years... hasn't worked. :D

I like the one that shows them taping a video camera to the laptop with tape (gotta make it look as bad as possible). What they don't tell you is

    1) There are PC laptops also with the camera built-in.
    2) What do you do if/when the camera dies? Send your entire laptop back for repairs or send the built-in camera back for repairs?
    3) What if you want to buy a better one a year or two down the road? Do you buy a new camera or do you buy a new laptop?

Marketing... another word for trying to fool the customer. :)

I installed Vista here. I like the product so far and haven't had a problem except connecting to one SMB share which was fixed with a 1-digit registry change.

Back in the 70's and 80's, the term "PC" actually referred to an IBM PC or an IBM PC clone. Eventually anything that emulated or acted like an IBM PC was referred to as a PC. Macs/Apple on the other hand was proprietary everything back then and were not IBM PC-compatible. So they were uh... Macs and Apples. :D
