the only reason they might is because they can’t extend him without creating cap space to do so so it might be too difficult to create cap space next year for them to try to resign him and not sure they can completely compete with every other team as he’s unrestricted so they don’t necessarily have a choice.
my understanding is that Memphis can create the cap space for JJJ. But that may mean they can’t keep Aldama. But extending JJJ is not in question and supposedly he is the least available of anyone on the Grizz. I don’t even let myself dream about getting JJJ.
Game Theory's Offseason Review My notes: TLDR version...Basically similar framework as Yossi, but different target. Giannis top target. Running back okay if that doesn't work. Long version: FVV 3 for $96M Stevens Adams 3 for $45M Taxpayer MLE, may use Landale, Holiday could be cut to open up most of non- tax MLE and stay under 1st apron. Tari, JSJ tough to estimate. Sam thinks Rockets want JSJ to win back starting 4. Actuality, JSJ isn't there. Ideal Scenario Reed, Amen, Tari, JSJ, Sengun. JSJ 4 for $90-$100M. Tari 4 for $80M-$100M Ideal Consolidation Trade Giannis Amen likely All-NBA player at some point. Either this summer or next summer, Rockets either need a guy to become a star or must trade for one. Don't see a No. 1 Option right now. Giannis- most give up: Bryce: Sengun, picks Sam: Amen, Green, pick or 2. If Amen costs 2 assets less than Sengun, would do Amen. Trading Amen allows more flexibility to build roster around Giannis. Sengun + Amen for Giannis? More sense for fewer, better assets to keep depth. Durant: No crazy assets. Jalen Green, Landale, Aaron Holiday, No. 10. Happy keeping picks if Phoenix not reasonable. No trade up. Draft pick options: Kasparas, Bryant, CMB, Maluach? Not crazy to run it back. Not a fan of Jalen Green. Would move if they can. Real asset value to give up if Murphy available.
I’d have to think about for SGA. Jokic if I thought he was going to stick around for a long time. That’s it for my list.
I think Sam is crazy for that. If Rockets trade for Giannis, I expect Sengun and JSJ being big money pieces of the deal. Other that, I think combined FVV and Adams money will be a little less. Doubtful FVV is below 20M. Probably between $25 and $30M AAV. FVV non-fans will likely scream at that number, and disregard any opinion of that number. Maybe it will end up being too much, but a lot of people rationally think FVV will get more than $25M AAV. The Tari, JSJ discussion was good in my opinion. I do think if Rockets make a big trade, one of them is in the deal to help manage money.
FVV could indeed be overpaid by the Rockets. I think it is probably going to happen, but I will scream about it, because no one has been able to explain to me who we are competing with for his services. None of the teams that would want him have the cap space. His market should be set at the tax payer MLE of 14.1 M. I could see the Rockets giving him a bit more just to show respect, but with upcoming extensions and the such it just doesn’t make sense. Even if I actually wanted him on the team, I wouldn’t bid against myself. He got overpaid for 2 years, so why is it disrespect to pay him the market price for a couple of years?
Can Fred get more than $25 mil per on the open market? And in a better situation than Houston? If not, I don’t see why we would pay him anything over 3/$75-80 especially coming off a year where he missed some time and shot 38% from the field.
Bryce: I have to remind myself Giannis is a top 3 player. The reason for that is because he isnt one. And why would the Rockets trade 22 year old point forward Giannis for old less versatile Giannis? Like....the Rockets wouldn't offer Amen straight up for Giannis. Even Sam himself said Amen will be an All NBA Player someday. So we're trading a guy protected to be a Top 15 player for an old Top 10 player? Yeah Im alright thanks.
My honest answer is: "maybe" The cap has gone up and will continue to go up and he is an amazing 3rd guard on a title contender team and could start. He isn't a star but overall is pretty damn good.
This.... People keep forgetting the cap jumps each season and teams have ways to clear space. All the cap projections for teams assume they are bringing back players under contract even it's a team option or non-guaranteed.
He only said he would prefer they shed a singular asset instead of selling the farm for Yannis and Yannis wouldn't have any depth to play with. And the biggest singular asset is Amen, that is all he said. I don't think Giannis comes either way so I am not getting upset about a hypothetical idea.
