He has a problem with that pitch. That is currently his seemingly lone weak spot. Thus, his 'Achilles heel'.

I'm betting Yordan gets rookie of the year. He already has more homers and RBIs than Vlad with less than half the number of at bats.

But the media has all but anointed Vlad Jr. The next big thing... like when they anointed Buxton over Correa, it took the years to get off the notion that the Astros committed the biggest mistake ever!

When Correa was drafted, people said he could be the next A-Rod. He was a top-5 MLB prospect his entire time in the minors. He came up the same year as Buxton and won Rookie of the Year.

What years did the world think the Astros committed "the biggest mistake ever"?

The Astros took a lot of heat because the claim was the Astros were cheap and took Correa for under slot money! Rumor was Buxton and Appel were going to take full slot money. With the savings, the Astros managed to sign McCullers. Buxton was always rated the highest prospect while he was in the minors, Correa had to earn his status. Media heads kept attacking the Astros as why they were a joke of a franchise!!! Appel was also seen as slotted #1 guy with Buxton right behind. Correa was way back in #8 prospect .

Correa finally silenced all the naysayer in 2015. And Buxton’s on and off performance has dispelled their criticism.

Buxton was regarded as a can’t miss prospect, a once in a generation talent, and the Astros took Correa who was viewed as a top 7 or 8 talent, who took the under slot money, for sign ability purposes.

In 2011-2014 the Astros were the whipping boys of MLB and sports media.

Maybe we took different memories of what happened, maybe I was in edge since my favorite team the Astros were a laughing stock, how they were the first team to score a zero in ratings, and it was estimated about 500 TVs tuned into the Astros one game.... Maybe you are right, maybe I’m remembering things differently. But it’s cool, our Astros are a model franchise now, and it was worth all the laughter because they dared to be great and break protocol of how to build a Juggernaut....

I do not challenge how you remember history, but I have my own memories of what happened, which makes all of this so much sweeter.

While it may have been a surprise that the Astros took Correa over Buxton and Appel, they weren't universally panned for it. Correa was pretty much acknowledged as the top infielder in the draft.

ESPN and Bleacher Report really liked the pick, especially under the assumption that it also led to McCullers. And, while Buxton generally ranked above Correa in the minors in 2013 and 2014, no one was ridiculing Houston.

What national reporters kept attacking the Astros from 2012-2015?

Correa did not debut in Top 5 on every list (not sure if any). Biggest mistake ever was obvious hyperbole, but they were plenty of people that thought Astros made a mistake until Correa was performing well in upper minors.

Very true, Correa was posting awesome numbers in the minors, but the pundits would not put him ahead of Buxton, Correa clawed himself to upper echelon of the prospect list by his outstanding minor league performance. Man the massive love they had for Buxton was surreal. It was Sano and Buxton 1 and 2 rated prospects for about 2 years.... Buxton has finally started to make a mark after repeatedly being sent back to the minors, his defense is elite, but his offense has needed some patience.

But enough of Correa, this thread is about Alvarez :). My bad for diverting it from our rookie phenom!!!!

Who are these ‘plenty of people’? I can’t find a single entity that ‘attacked’ the Astros on their selection of Correa or chastised them for the apparent mistake of not taking Buxton or Appel.

Buxton was absolutely the consensus top player in that draft, but once Correa got in the system it was clear to everyone that the Astros didnt make some "huge mistake."
The Astros got crapped on by the media because they were historically bad.
