I have a feeling Yi's going to turn out like Stro, nice athleticism but disappears in game. I hope he proves me wrong.

    CELTICS NOTEBOOK
He'll go long way to see Yi
By Peter May, Globe Staff | January 27, 2007

TORONTO -- If you're looking for that new job opportunity, being Danny Ainge's travel agent promises to be a most rewarding one.
Ainge, who just returned from an extended trip through Europe, said yesterday he is headed to China next week to scout 7-foot Yi Jianlian, widely expected to enter the NBA draft. It will be Ainge's first trip to China and he will be seeing Yi for the second time, having seen him a few years ago at the Nike Summit in San Antonio. General manager Chris Wallace has seen Yi play this year.

Because Yi is still under age (although no one seems to know if he's 19 or 21), Ainge is not allowed to speak about what could be the second Chinese-born player to be taken in the first round of the draft, after Yao Ming. But someone who bore a striking resemblance to Ainge said of Yi, "He's more of a four-man [power forward] who can shoot it, block shots. He's putting up some good numbers over there."

Over there is Guangdong, where Yi plays for the Tigers. And that is one of the concerns about drafting Chinese players -- the level of competition. They are not allowed to play outside the country -- in Europe, for instance, where the competition is much better -- before they are deemed NBA-worthy. Yi is no stranger to basketball watchers, however. He was on the Chinese Olympic team in 2004, which was coached by Dallas Mavericks assistant Del Harris.

Ainge said there was no one else he planned to scout on this trip and he thought he could still get a read on Yi even if the competition isn't the best.

"I remember seeing film of Kobe [ Bryant] in high school and that wasn't the best competition," Ainge said. "But there are always things you can evaluate."

Yi Jianlian (212-C/F-87) returned from Italy and his efforts to bring the World University Games to his native Shenzen to score 31 points, grab 18 rebounds and block 4 shots as Guangdong defeated Shandong 102-91.

Loved to have that number 8 pick again (without actually being in the lottery of course)

Seems like he has talent but not the fire

Maybe the guy should take a page from Steve Francis's book and demand to be traded to the Rockets. :D

I don't know anything about him, but considering our lack of depth in the frontcourt, I can't imagine that the Rockets front office wouldn't love to have him on board.

Given all the superstar big men like Oden, Durant, Horford, Noah, Wright that will or may be available this year, maybe Yi should wait another year (or invent a time machine and go back to last year).

I dont think it'll matter in all honesty. even if he was picked 30th, he'd get the same money as the #1 guy, except he might have a 3 year instead of a 4 year.

    Impossible.

The NBA CBA has, for a long time, incorporated a rookie wage scale which determines your salary based on the order drafted. Accordingly the #2 can't make more than the #1, etc etc etc.

Joachim Noah cost himself about $1 million annually in 2006 dollars by not going #1 last year, if he falls down to 4 or 5 this year.

EDIT:all the rookie scale contracts up to 2011 are shown here:
