like i said, America sucks at soccer that's why there's apathy about it. i'm not questioning why we suck. that's irrelevant. just the fact that we suck results in apathy (amongst most Americans).
Isn't the U.S. men's team ranked number 5 in the world? Isn't the U.S. women's team generally regarded as the best in the world?
I don't think that has much effect. We're awesome at Track & Field and women's basketball, but nobody realy cares about taht stuff either.
ok, the sport just isn't that exciting to watch then. maybe it's b/c it's never been a staple of American culture.
I believe it is going to be held in South Africa. First time ever on the African continent. No, there was a drawing awhile back with a lotto type system where balls are randomly drawn. EDIT: I am going to quit replying or even looking at this thread b/c its original intent doesn't deserve the attention. See you in the FuBball thread! Peace.
Well that would be interesting. Not exactly where I'd prefer to go but I guess we will see what it is like in a few years. Oh, I didn't know that is how they did it. Wow, sucks for us.
did you see the 3-nil lashing we received? it doesn't really matter where you rank if you don't win anything. we're just not elite.
Good teams get thrashed. It happens. Unfortunately, the U.S. was up against the second ranked team in the world.
There's an interesting article about it here: http://www.slate.com/id/2142554/ as well as here: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hruby/060613 Yeah but that ranking system is a sham.
uh.. the FIFA ranking system is flawed to no end. The US TEAM would be ranked nowhere near #5 if national teams are ranked properly. I can think of 10 teams off the top of my head that would probably beat the US team 8-9 times out of 10 if played at their full potential. As for the comments about RBs and people running 100 yards in 9+ seconds... can they do it for 45 minutes straight? Also, do they have the feet coordination to dribble a ball and position themselves to kick the ball decently? I'm sure that comes with practice, but I believe that to enjoy a sport, you almost have to play it to some extent or you won't understand how hard a sport truly is.
That's 45 minutes a half. Most NBA players don't even play 45 minutes a night. Normally no more than 12 minutes at a time, straight.
I am NOT contending that you can simply take an existing football player and drop him on a soccer field. I AM contending that if we get the kids at a young enough age BEFORE they go to football/basketball/etc., the U.S. would have a much better pool of quality athletes to draw from. I do not see how any one can argue that point.
I can argue it. Plenty of young kids in the US play soccer from a very young age. In fact far more play soccer than any other sport, if the stats are to be believed, and we've heard this claim since the early 90's. Then they grow up, lose interest, and go on to other sports.
