try this... do a search on "temp", make sure you include hidden files. and look for a temp folder under .../local settings/ then delete everything in there that you can. you might not be able to some files but go one by one if you have to.

then to go start-> run-> than type in "msconfig", go to startup and uncheck everythig, and restart... then start checking things back one by one and see what's causing the slow startup. note, they can be all uncheck and windows will run since they're not system critical programs.

also. you might want to see how many fonts you have installed. some programs i.e. adobe suites will put fonts in. go to the control panel and if you see alot of fonts.. remove some. this goes true for other os's

You should have at least 1 GB of ram to run XP. Some video cards don't have onboard RAM so it also takes some of that 512 for video memory. Check out your video card specs to make sure.

Also, if you haven't messed with the virtual memory settings, increase the minimum cap to at least 1600 MBs. (right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab ->performance settings -> Advanced tab -> change -> Custom size button -> initial size "1536" -> set button -> ok)

The max size is optional, but you won't get better gains after 1500 mb. It's not a substitute for more RAM, but your computer will be quicker.

If you haven't broken into your new computer, I'd reformat the thing with a fresh Windows XP installation. There's less preinstalled programs that you have no idea which is running in the background.

Nah....i've use Yahoo for years. That, and GMail.

Thanks for all the rest, guys! I uninstalled all the Earthlink crap and now have independent programs monitoring the security stuff.

    Once again, many thanks!

*cough* I still wish I had a Mac *cough*
