Here is an experiment for those interested. Determine your weight, then pick up enough free weights to tip the scales at 310. Then jump as high as you can. What's your vertical!?

If you're an untrained athlete, then maybe you would, but that's if you don't get injured. So, no they wouldn't usually work unless you had a 12 inch vertical to start out with.

7+ footers typically have very weak ankles and knees...especially those in the 7'4"-7'6". The human boy is just not meant to be that tall, so it's no surprise that they have some physical deficiencies. You can't expect a person that size to be explosive.

This explains why elephants don't jump. I don't think improving on his jumping is his top priority. What Yao needs is toughness, attitude and learn how to take advantage of his giant body. Yao should take a lesson from Sir Charles.

But Yao's legs are not like most 7'4-7'6 guys. He's got huge muscular legs. Those same problems and limitations should not apply to Yao. I think he can improve his vertical.

And by the way, "former" means the first thing, "latter" means the second thing.

Huge muscular legs doesn't mean much with respect to increasing your vertical. It shouldn't be a priority with Yao anyway. He needs to improve his mental approach more than anything.

I think Yao can't really improve his vertical very much. How about we improve his kid's vertical? ;)

The best woman volleyball player is Zhao Ruirui now. She is 6"6' and is only 22 years old. Not bad looking at all. And she has 52' vertical!!!!

I think the Chinese government should get Yao's sperms and Zhao's eggs to make some babies. We will see several 8 footers with 40' vertical!!!!

Sorry I think Zhao's vertical probably is around 40". I used her reach (326cm) minus her height to get 52' but that's not really right. Her arm above the head should be around 10-12 inches.

Whats this experiment supposed to prove? Francis has me by about 40 lbs and he's got me by 6" of vertical. I'm sure there are a number of players that have me by more weight than that and still can beat me in vertical and I didnt think mine was to bad for a white boy at 36" :p

You are wrong again. Zhao's vertical should be around 30". I am 5'10" and my hand can reach 226cm flat footed. Zhao's hands must be able to reach at least 250cm flat footed.

Ok I am wrong again. Actually 326cm is the spike height (don't really know how it is calculated) which probably is a little bit lower than reach. I think she still has around 35 vertical. I think that's about right for a female world-class volleyball player.

    ymc,

They call it the strike height, but it is actually the reach. The highest reach for female volleyball players is around 335cm, which were achieved by American and Cuban black players. 35" vertical is very good even for a NBA power forward. It is extremely hard for the tall female atheletes to achieve.

Anyway my point is to create tall babies with decent vertical. 8 footers with 30' vertical are still nice. :)

    ymc,

You can also look at the WNBA players. There are only a few of them can dunk the ball barely. So, their verticals are around 320 cm because the rim is only 305cm.

Slim and strong legs and long tendons at the heel normally mean high verticals. Look at Kangaroos. Their legs are very thin, but they can jump 9 yards in each step during a normal run.

    Leg size is optional.
