Won't resort to calling you an 'idiot'...but, you clearly don't understand the rockets defensive scheme... Rocks play a help-side defense where if a guy gets beat to the basket, the closest man needs to rotate over, slowing the defender down until the beat man can recover... On this particular play, Cat got beat coming off a pick (essentially trailing Gino), Yao was the closest man, and didn't rotated over...
It's called Step up and take a charge by Steve,Cat or even Yao if he's on time to do it. We didn't help out at all on defense.
Whaa? Vs. the Grizzlies, the problem is that Gasol basically does what he wants inside, which opens up the outside. The Kings and Mavs are just simply too quick overall for the Ground & Pound approach of JVG. The reason why the Rox losea gainst those teams is their offense. We have one of the better defensive teams in the league, in case you hadn't noticed. Sad but true.
Can't blaim you there, but Yao admitted himself that he reacted too slowly on the play... By no means am I blaiming Yao for the loss...He played well, just was a little fatigued (and it showed during crunch time)... Also, MoT had a couple costly mistakes at the end of the game that has seemed to go unnoticed...a Turnover to Duncan, and giving Horry the wide open 3 ball...
some days, the front court defense is awsome, and the backcourt defense is hourendous, and vise versa. It changes. But i would say that both sides have overall down a good job, seeing we are one of the best defensive teams
Jumpshooting teams beat the Rockets due to the perimeter defense. Sonics are a mediocre team, and they are 2-0 against the Rockets. Any team that depends on a post presence is going to have a hard time with Yao and Cato on the inside.
You mean that play where Yao SWATTED Tony Parker's (?) shot, only to have TD put it back? Who was rotating on Yao's man when that happened? Guards gotta do a better job fighting off the pick.
Yao may not have gotten the block, but he sure as hell made Gino take a very tough shot. The spurs just made a lot more clutch shots than us.
No excuses, Yao should have said I'm 7'6", I'm future of this team, I should have knocked Ginobili on his ass.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/statistics?stat=tmcompare&sort=3p%&league=nba&season=2004&seasontype=2&avg=pg&order=false&split=999 Everybody knows Rox's opponent FG percentage is ranked #1, and jumped into conclusion that Rox's defense is the best. Well, well, well, if you check the above link, clearly, Rox's opponent 3-pointer FG is ranked #16 on the list, pretty mediocre. Spurs is ranked #5. What does it tell you? It tells you that Rox's defense is not as good as Spurs, period. Spurs defense is clearly balanced, inside and out while Rox's defense is good inside, so-so outside. I do not know what is going to happen to SF, Cat or JJ, but I am pretty sure next season, at least one of them won't be the starter on this team if JVG is still the defensive coach he is supposed to be.
Why you guys don't give Ginobili the credit? It's a tough shot and he made it. He is very quick and could easily beat Kobe off the dribble. In the 1st game spurs vs lakers (2 overtime w/o duncan and parker), Kobe looked like an idiot when he was defending Ginobili. When Ginobili is on fire, he would go for wild, wild and crazy shots and he can make these shots.
See, there's one problem... other teams know how to run a simple PnR. If Yao is going to guard Ginobili, he's committed. All Manu's gotta do is dish to TD, then who's going to guard him? Cat? TD will get the pass and shove it down the Rockets' throat, and moronic fans that have no clue about basketball would watch ESPN and perpetuate the myth that Yao is a lousy defender. Not that it matter. The bottom line is, if your perimeter defender is getting beat by his man every single goddam time, your big man can't do sh*t about it.
Jumpshooting teams beat the Rockets (and they don't do it that regularly, despite what you may think) because that's t he shot that they prefer to give up, since its a lower percentage shot. That's a benefit. Go to 82games.com Check how much opposing guards are scoring against the Rockets; not that much. Then look at power forwards.
Ginobili deserves the credit, that was a great shot. Yao forced him to change it, he basically did his job. Only KG could have maybe gotten that ball.
Bingo - another defensive breakdown! Can't remember it was Spoon, MoT or Cato, but they should have rotated on TD...
That's the biggest complain I have against YAO. There is no way for him to guard those athletic players coming down to challenge him. Not even Shaq, or Duncan can stop that. You have to knock them down a couple fo times to set the tone, so they won't dare to challenge you again. But, for Ginobli? I'm not so sure. Someone said he is crazy, so a hard foul may not work here. As someone has said that Yao has made a lot progress in defending PnR, but he still ONE step slow in JUMPING out to cut the ball handler. I suggest JVG & the whole Rockets watch the game tape between the old Bulls and the Jazz. It was beautiful defense by the Bulls to stop Utah's PnR. --daoshi
