I noted in the game thread how Yao was going after rebounds with a determination I hadn't seen from him all year; I speculated that perhaps he knew what a rebounding beast Wallace is and so he had to be equally aggressive in order to match Big Ben. Little did I know the real motivation was his tardiness. I loved the effort, but Yao shouldn't need ANY external factors to spur him on to play this way--he should be playing like this EVERY NIGHT.
motay told yao you need to go out there and get 30 and 20. after the game, motay told yao after going for 22/20 that he still owes him. yao says "i'll write you a check". and yes I agree that yao needs to find ways of motivating himself to go out and workhard and have good games. do it for the team and do it for yourself, not because jvg is pissed at you and told you that you owe the team a good game. you need to instill in yourself that you owe yourself and the team good games every game. i also noticed lately yao fans have been getting awfully defensive when people criticise (with reason) yao's effort. you guys need to chill because everyone on the team gets criticized if their performance is not up to par. of course criticism is only fair if there's reason for them to criticize. why can't we all just get along? i think a lot of yao only fans should go to the ************ forum and chat there because it's totally biased there, you will only get yao fans - so it's probably better for you guys. this is a rox site so people should be free to criticise any players , the team, management, coach even fans themselves. I'd hate to see this site turn out with forum threads which relate nothing to basketball and everything yao vs this and that.
Don't be fooled by his playing of a meekly student role to JVG. This Yao guy is a monster, much more so mentally than physically. His 7-6 frame with agility may be a freak of nature, but his athleticism and skills always come with a sticker behind it, "for a guy of his size". But, his mental maturity and wisdom is just beyond my grasp. With regrads to his mental maturity, no sticker like "for a guy of his age" comes behind it. I know, age doesn't have anythig to do with wisdom, usually. But, considering his unreal circumstances, his ways of handling and carrying himself and surroundings just amazes me. I am a Korean, so, I guess, I can read the minds and between the lines of orientals better than most of you guys. I am telling you, this guy is a monster, mentally. A very, very loveable and respectable one. Contrary to beliefs of many of you guys, I can tell he is cocky as hell, reading this story and others. Yet, wise enough to know his limitations to earn some time and work hard to improve his weaknesses. And, humble enough to respect others. And, amazingly, good natured enough to be humorous and sincere at the same time. He will surely become a leader. That's inevitable, but the process will be at his chosen pace.
Vunny1408, you got the freedom of posting anything..such as criticizing yao (I am ok with that even you don't have a reason) but don't let people post what they like? ?? LOL..
He's cocky as hell? No, Rasheed Wallace is cocky as hell, Gary Payton is cocky as hell, George W. is cocky as hell...Yao Ming is a furry kitten compared to all of them...
nice first post buddy! you said what I always wanted to say I'll give this thread a 5 star simply for this observation -- not that the other part of the thread doesn't deserve it.
If guilt works in motivating him, then JVG should say things like. "You better grab 20 rebounds, or people will think that your mom raised a crappy basketball player." or even better yet "You like me, right Yao? Don't you want people to think I'm a good coach? KG and Duncan grab 20 rebounds for their coach. You don't want people to think Flip and Pops are better coaches than me, do you?" That seems to work in a lot of Asian families.
Understand you trying humor, but the certain sort of people you mentioned may be sensitive to your subconciousness beyond Bball. I don't mean you should be politically correct all the time. Funny is good, but one step forward is mocking.
lol. Tell it like it is, rockbox. I hope one of the things Yao takes from this game is how much we need him to play games with that attitude. I'm glad to hear that some posters feel Yao is cocky as hell inside. Hopefully, he'll show it more. On a different note, Yao always seems to have good games against Ben Wallace. I wonder why that is, especially given that other players seem to give Yao more problems.
That's what I'm waiting to see. If Yao really does have that attitude, then he better start showing it more often.
Ben Wallace doesn't seem to play dirty and mean. He doesn't "cheat" foul, pull, push, hold, scratch him like most others does. In the Piston games, for most of Yao's rebounds, the Piston didn't challenge him. Didn't fight for the rebound. Pistons guarding Yao 1-on-1 definitely help.
