I will think offensively Yao = 60% - 70 % of Dream. Although his moves are a lot more predictable and mechanical in recent years, he is still one of league's best scoring centers. His probelms offensively? 1. He is too slow and lacks of footwork. He can't react quickly enough if a lob is slightly out of his reach, thus fronting him will always be a great way to defend him. If he can't get the ball then he can't score, if he can't score, then his impact to the game is usually limited. 2. His aggressiveness is too inconsistent and like T-Mac, he is not mentally tough enough. Six years in the league, we still see him pass the ball when he should shoot, rush the shot when he still have plenty of time, or wait for double team to come when he is single covered. He can't not be consistently counted on, that is I think he is an all star, not a superstar. Defensively, it is really not even close. Opponents have game plan to ask small players single out Yao and attack him directly and often successful. Anyone dared to do the same to Dream?
IMO Wilt was just as good in many of these areas and far exceeded him in sheer power. But of course nobody in today's game can even hold a candle to Hakeem.
I'd argue that Wilt's defense was better, especially when he applied himself to it; Bill Russell once said Wilt did his job better than he did it himself. He shut down young Kareem when he was 35.
Yes, let's face it Yao is soft and it's hard to expect him to lead, but his top salary is well deserved, just because of the huge fan base he brings to NBA. So I think this comparison is meaningless.
The comparion is brainless because people use mathmatical figures to compare two players in different era. Its beyond r****dness.
