I have looked closely in slow motion now twice, and he picks up his dribble while his right foot is still on the ground. It's not really even close. He then switches his pivot to his left foot. I'm quite certain it is a travel. But really, it hardly matters since it wouldn't be called all that often in the NBA anyhow.
I don't think it's a travel. Yes, he picks up his dribble while his right foot is still on the ground, but at the same instant his left foot is in the air and has not yet been established. Once the left foot hits the ground, for a split second both feet are on the ground, and he then has the right to choose which foot to use as his pivot foot, so he chooses the left foot. He could have chosen instead to pivot on the right foot, for instance if he faked to the middle with that step of his left foot, then spun back outside for a fadeaway j, or even a fake fadeaway j, up-and-under dipsydoodle TWO-AND-A-FOUUUULLLLL!!!! Oops, sorry, got carried away there. If this is a travel, which in my opinion it is not, then most layups and dunks done in stride would also have to be called travels. Another point is that he does what alot of players do, one notable being Kenny Thomas, in that after he dribbles, he brings the ball up in an arch as he takes the step with his left foot. This does two things: 1) Moves the ball vertically to reduce the chance that any help defender can slap the ball away, and 2) "Simulates," or gives the illusion, that the ball is still on its way up from the last dribble, decreasing the likelyhood that it will be called a travel. KT used this basic technique, and variations of it, often. EG should take note. Francis does it too on jumpers, but when Francis does it he often blatantly travels, even beginning the "arch" to simulate the continuation of the dribble a good second after stopping the dribble and grabbing the ball with both hands, taking two steps to the side (one sidestep more than legal), and popping the j. For some reason (maybe the officials are busy watching the ball as he sweeps it in the arc, not paying attention to his feet?), he rarely got called for it. Pretty sneaky move if you can get away with it.
it was not traveling... you know why it wasnt???? because the refs didnt blow the whistle thats why . i hope he has that much aggression this year, it was a monster dunk, but you still have to look at how tall the guys were that got dunked on. but i still loved it ... its cool seeing yao get nasty on someone and give him the ole "ahhhh get off me punk" afterwards. but if he really wants to make a statement he needs to do it against the big baby.. i mean shaq. even if he gives the yell afterward it will be worth the T, just to see shaq eyes pop open
I am really curious what Yao shouted in the clip. Just couldn't recognize these nasty words. Was he shouting in English or in Chinese? Anyone could tell what he was shouting?
