It's a PR statement pretty much. He could just have his doctor say "no".

If he plays the tournament, sit him out half if not all preseason.

Mostly sounds like he's respectfully not giving a definite "NO I wont".

I think Yao may play. Just like Manu Ginobili, Yao believes he represents china from the bottom of his heart.

...and the hits just keep on coming.

This, yet another tiny piece of dark comedy within the larger Greek tragedy.

Everyone here knows Yao isn't going to straight up tell his Billion some odd fans that he isn't going to play in the WC's so he can stay healthy for an NBA season. Hes just covering his ass and will blame his inability to play on the doctors. Remember Big Z said the doctors put a limit on how much he could play for a year.

Of course, Argentina in his case.

It's just politics. Yao will show his gesture to everybody and his doctor will stop it. Nonetheless, by next August, Yao should be aggressively rehabbing to get back for the 2010 preseason training camp no matter what.

You can't take what Yao says literally. He's a savvy giant with a hidden agenda. He's smart and equipped with good PR skills. It's a great way of saying no to the world championship game without tarnishing his image.

And then he'll get 8 min/game for several games, and then we'll see where we go from there ;)

i kno you were joking but if they would have had an ease back plan for Yao last year he could be playing now.

big z had an ease back...now t-mac...yao will need one as well.

    HECK YES !!!

That way he comes into camp with all the worries behind him, and his confidence high and more in shape.

    Let the man play.

    I agree..

I really hope the doctors say no when the time comes. The Rockets should be the first team he plays for when he gets healthy.

    No ifs, ands or buts.

At first I thought no way! Now thinking more, the Rockets say Yao is ahead of schedule and actually might be ready to play at the end of the season. This being said no way they play him just to be on the safe side. So imo if he plays this summer I think he could get into game shape and ready for next season. If the foot is truly repaired then it should'nt really matter if he plays this summer. If he has issues with the foot or not the Rockets will know what to do going into the season. So i'm for it and think it will be a plus either way

On the plus side, at least China won't make it far in the tourney so they will play 3-4 fewer games than Spain or Argentina.

Let him play a few min,so we can determine if we should give him an extension or trade him. I guess that the doctor would say "No".

Obama should force the Rocket to trade Yao to China for a Stimulus Package for this country...
