It's a BLOCK! It takes more than just "getting there" and be stationary. You gotta give the other player "reasonable" time and space to react to avoid the contact. Otherwise, any defender could just easily stick a leg out in a split second to trip someone over.
am i missing the sarcasm here? yao outweighs shane by like 100 pounds and was going full speed. as evidenced by his never taking a charge from yao again comment, i'm sure it hurt quite a bit (and he knew it would and still stood in there and took it). there's no flopping when yao or shaq run you over. while that might be the right play, once someone like yao or shaq gets going, they're a runaway locomotive and it's going to take a long time to stop. especially since yao probably couldn't believe he was still dribbling at that point and was just flying along not knowing what to do and just reacting. looked pretty natural at it (just like that amazing behind the back against portland) but still wasn't stopping until he scored or someone took a charge.
I agree. Two Rockets made a great play together. It's a treat for every Rocket fan. I don't really care whether it was a block or charge.
Looking at the higher quality video in slow motion, it appears to be a block as Battier's right foot was not set when the contact occurred. But it's very close and so the call could have gone either way. The question is whether Yao gets 50% of the calls in these situations.
If that were the nba, Battier would of been inside the circle so booyyaa, block ^^^ and I agree, that WOULD suck if Battier got injured Could you imagine yao re-injuring his foot from that while also injuring Battier.. The nightmare and utter shock, the fear and agony this board would be in.. And a "Preseason the Pain" thread wouldn't even do the justice to crack a smile on our faces.
How is getting out of the way and letting the other team score showing respect? The truth is that it's lack of these type of plays/players that is the reason why the USA hasn't been as dominant in world play as they should be. Battier could have gotten out of the way and 95% of the NBA players probably would have, but this is Battier's style of play: he's not going to give up any easy points.
Wait... so he was arguing for a RULE CHANGE in the middle of a game? Way to think outside of the box, big man.
Is it really that difficult to tell that he was talking about an official rule change by the FIBA, not something done by the referees during the game?
The bottomline is both Battier and Yao would be great for the rockets next season. What Battier did on yao was perfectly ok and he should do that no matter who's playin against him. It shows what kind of player battier is and he will grain respect from Yao and vise versa.
Why? Both feet were set, he was stationary before Yao hit him, he was sqared up and he did not leave his feet or lean into Yao. How could his position have been better? Great moves by Yao but this was not even close. It was a charge all the way.
Hyperbole: "...this was not even close." Yes, of course, Shane didn't just move over quickly and establish position for less than a second before Yao got there. I mean, please- I understand a vote either way, but "not even close"? Wow.
I believe position is position in FIBA rules. This isn't the NBA and the NBA seems to add all sorts of rules that makes things very controversial for fans. Honestly, it makes games a lot easier to be decided by the refs instead of the players.
Yao had a guy on the wing, if he gives that ball up, he gets it back for the Slamma Jamma, what the was he thinkg? It's a charge
By your standards, there would could be no charges called in basketball... I don't see how a player could be more stationary than that...
