Not exactly a fair match, but it is fun to see the big fella enjoy himself. Dunk Dunk Dunk.

Even thought it is against weaker team, Yao is clearly playing the game Shaq-style, very different from about a Year ago. Expect to see a big season from Yao!

china taipai is next, tonight, or tommorw morning, taipai is taiwan right? neways it should be a breeze. if neone wants updates theres a play by play at sina and probably sohu too, so just check that out(in chinese tho). tommorw, 25th, should be interesting as the NT plays iran, with their persian yao ming, shouldnt be much of a problem tho, i heard he sucks. We will see tho.

Why doesn't NBA.com tv pick up some of these games? They showed some of the European Championships a couple of weeks ago. I think I will email them.

Yeah that's what pisses me off! But it's all to do with tv rating and stuff but hopefully they will at least show the Final if China does go all the way.

Chinese NT got easy 1st win - Sep. 23, 2003 - by Cara Yip

Home favourites China beat Syria 103-51 in the 1st day of the Asian Championship held at the city of Harbin. Chinese NT opened a 32-9 lead in the 1st quarter and run away the game easily. The scores in the 4 quarters are 32-9, 22-19, 23-9, 26-14. The starting 5 are led by Ming Yao (226-C-80) at the center position with Wei Liu (190-G-80) and Jinsong Zhang (198-F-73) at guards, Fangyu Zhu (200-F-83) and Ke Li (208-C-81) at forwards. Zhu led a balanced team scoring effort with 19 points on 2/3 at 2-pointers and 5/10 at 3-pointers. Yao added 18 points on 7/9 at 2-point shooting and 4/6 at free throw shooting with 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 blocks and 3 dunks in 20 minutes of playing time.

But the player I am impressed the most is young PF Ke Li (208-C-81). What I love the most in the game tonight was his fearlessness under the basket. From what I saw, he looked to go inside every time when he got the ball under the basket. For this game, he had 14 points on 7/11 2-point shooting, 4 offensive rebounds, 3 defensive rebounds, 2 assists and 1 dunk. Li has ideal PF height at 2.07 cm. He looks to have good post moves under the basket as well as a very reliable jump shot which is out to 18-20 feet. The outside shooting ability can especially pay great dividends when the other teams double team Ming Yao (226-C-80) inside. He sure looks like a great compliment to Yao in China's inside game. He still needs to add more weight and muscle but his taller height and comparatively stronger body give him an advantage over rivals like Feng Du (203-C/F-81) at the same position in the NT right now and in the future. Regardless, Li is the type of power forward the Chinese NT are looking for in the future.

In a thorough dominant peformance, it is hard to point out any weaknesses in China's game. But here are a few points China may need to improve in future game:

    1. Turnovers. China still had 18 turnovers against such weak opponents. They need to improve in this area against stronger teams especially in crunch time.

    2. PG play. Wei Liu (190-G-80), Shiquang Guo (192-G-75) and Bin Fan (178-G-70) split minutes fairly equally in the game vs Syria. None of them played more than 20 minutes. It shows that their play was inconsistent at best and also the coach might still be unsure of a PG he trust in the clutch. The 3 PGs combined for only 4 assists but had 6 turnovers in total. Their playmaking and ballhandling skills must improve for China to go furthur, maybe not totally necessary in this competition but sure essential in future Olympics games.

    3. Playing without Ming Yao (226-C-80). China dominated in the 1st quarter with Yao in the lineup. But when Yao didn't play in the 2nd quarter, China only won the quarter 22-19. They improved slightly in the 4th quarter when Yao also didn't play but still only won 26-14, far less than the score with their starting center being on the court. In short, China allowed only 18 points with Yao but 33 points without. Yao also had 5 of 8 China's block shots. It not only showed the importance of the star center, but also the reliance on him in the Chinese team, especially on the defensive end. The NT need to learn to play better without their center and in fact anyone else to truely improve as a national team, especially against such weak competition.

    Other results today:
    Uzbekistan 68-64 Hong Kong
    Lebonan 79-70 Kazakhstan
    Chinese Teipei 74-83 Iran
    India 94-74 Kuwait
    Japan 66-64 Philippines
    Qatar 66-53 Jordan
    Korea 103-72 Malaysia
