It seemed like after he got more verbal and protested a call in the second half (his 5th foul) that he ended up getting better treatment from the refs to close the game. Maybe he is making progress with speaking up, albeit very slowly..

I don't think you can say Yao is timid for a chinese person, because that implies that timidness is a genetic or cultural trait, which I hope you are not saying since PRC'rs seem to get angry very easily. He is timid for a basketball player, especially one who gets abused by players and refs.

It might be fair to say that Yao is tall for a Chinese person :p

...or any person for that matter.

I say "to hell with that idea". I watch basketball games, I want my team win, that is all I care. Nobody represents an entire culture, not even Yao. And if he feels he has the reponsibility to represent his country, then I will tell him that he is not doing a good job because what people will think all chinese are easy to take advantage of like him. Remember the rule, the strongest survive. It is better to be a bully, ie Uncle Sam, than a nice person, such as Yao.

Sure, because it was a national team game being played in front of thousands of boisterous chinese fans, but put him in the NBA with bigger fish and remove the national element and i'm not sure if the same thing ensues

Yao has the weight of all the world's Chinese people on his shoulders. Give him a break.

I have a solution. All we need is to find a lady Macbeth type of female companion for Yao to pump him up.

Well, when Yao was benched after his 4th or 5th foul, he threw his towel down with authority. He's getting more aggressive day by day. :D
Now, when he then proceeds to jump up and down on that flattened towel, he'll have taken the next step. :D

Yao is not really nice. He just lacks the skillset to fight without being caught.
His off-season training should include boxing and wrestling. He needs to learn how to get other players off-balance and how to move other players without being caught.

Some people are just good at cheating in exams without being caught. They have practiced the skill over the years. Others won't dare to cheat during exams, but if you teach them the techniques, they will at least become decent at cheating.

You obviously didn't see what happened next. After Yao threw his towel down and started to walk away, Yao came back and apologized to the towel. Then he proceeded to pick up the towel and gingerly place it back among the other towels.

I'm a Chinese, but if I'm the size of Yao, I would kill myself if I play the way Yao played everyday.

Sometime, I really hate the way Yao play, it's so............soft.

But I guess different person have different attitude.

Hakkem Olajuwon is the nicest guy you could meet off the court, but it did'nt stop him from dismanteling some of the biggest and meaniest players in history?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ok - let me preface this by saying I'm not chinese! But I do have friends who are Chinese, friends who actually live in China, and I've just been in China for a little while.

I would have to say, in general, that the Chinese culture is focussed more on individualism and assertiveness than harmony - people over there are very 'pushy' and tend to look out for their own needs first before worrying about how their actions might influence someone else.

I'm not bagging out Chinese people at all - and I'm not saying that I think anything is better/worse etc - just providing an observation!!!

Well, I think what you saw is typical for a fast-growing emerging market. People are hungry for wealth and there is no much constraint as usual - so their worst personality is maximized.

The traditional Chinese culture is very peaceful, focusing more on harmony and society than on individuals. Just that people lost respect to their ancient treasure in the past years.

Things will get better and I know Chinese people will gradually get their traditional culture back, hopefully in time before it diminishes.

Yeah one typical behavior of many Chinese or Asian people is, we always try to hold the anger, and release when we can't bear it any more. Yao's anger is accumulating. I just hope when he explodes someday, he won't get other one killed, or himself.

I curse Yao as badly as others when he plays sissy. But on the other hand, I realize there's a whole business team behind him operating on a $76M project. So he doesn't just behave himself.

By the way, court violence was and still is a not small issue in Chinese basket ball league.
