Obviously a player w/ Yao's mentality wants to return sooner than later.

But that mentality is a gift and a curse. It often leads players to return too early and then re-injure themselves.

He needs to take all the time he needs to heal completely.

It is always best to think positive. He just wants to set a goal and hopefully reach it. If 6 months is his goal then so be it. Lets wish Him all the best.

If we look to the past, he doesn't have a good track record for Rocket's knee surgeries. His record with the ankle surgery has been good. Maybe the foot surgery will be ok, since Clanton's major problem is the knee surgery. :(

Man breaks like a twig 3 out of 4 seasons and he expects to rush back for duty....

Heal up properly Yao, and take your chances then.

I had forgotten that, thanks for reminding us. You know, I think he was right. But, I guess no one walks away from fame and fortune willingly. I wonder how many comebacks Brett Farve will make? Even MJ made too many.

That's pretty much as I see it.

If this has been posted, sorry http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-yaorockets071809&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

But I'm not buying into the fear, the epic story or the prevalent Rockets fans' Yao-fatigue.

The one thing I think everyone here needs to ponder is why Morey repeatedly said "Yao's playing the best basketball of his career" last season. All Morey fans and detractors alike are confused by it. We are not sure why Morey why he'd throw his credibility out there that left Yao fans scratching their heads.

Morey's mouth was a prayer to get Yao to sign an extension? I don't think even the most naieve or ignorant all-star would be swayed by suck-ups to the media - much less one that came here with a team of advisors.

Yao's worth on the court has been destroyed here by the denial of those that don't realize he's going to be here and just can't stomach it.

Regarding the surgery, wow this is epic. It's new. Big Z's success is as relevant to Walton, Bowie et al even if all that was 20 years ago. But of course Yao is unprecedented.

Ergo "The Greatest Story in the History of Professional Sports" is awaiting it's ultimate climax. The plot twist, the "gotcha" moment.

How many people here "promised" TMac would never again wear a Rockets jersey? How many are ready to write-off Yao next season and possibly forever?

Well, some people will realize when it's time to get popcorn so they won't miss the important part of the story.

I have had 4 knee operations, 1 major and a major shoulder operation. Yes, Yao should begin rehab in a matter of 2 - 3 weeks without a doubt. After surgery you have to get your muscles flaring again asap in order to keep from loosing a ton of muscle. As for "basketball activity" I would say he probably means getting out and taking jumpers, free throws, etc... It doesnt mean he is going to be out doing the Shanghai Shake dropping turnaround j's on people.

Why they still trust this Clanton guy? He has a terrible history in treating Yao's foot. First he said the foot would never have problem again after pins were put in in 07/08 season. You know what happened. Then he made the claim that this last fracture was no big deal and Yao should be back in two months. Then you know what happened.

i agree with that...i think its best case scenario that the doctors gave to yao and he is using that as a goal...he may reach it and he might not...who knows...but if big Z can come back in 10 months and his injury was worse than whats not to say Yao can't come back in 6-8 months...even if yao came back in 7 monts..he would be back by march...
i think its a good idea to have a goal..something to reach for while YAO is rehabbing to push him...
obviously if we aer out of the playoff picture, it would be stuipid for him to come back...but if theyt are in it, and he is cleared to play, then why not go for it....i'm sure he knows and the doctors will know when he is ready to play....
i wish him the best but at least we have some hope...nobody is really talking about his career being over anymore.....

i think we will get more info and a better idea after the surgery is performed next week....after they look in there they might realize its not as bad as they thought...or they might need to do more work than they originally thought...who knows...we'll see next week...hope for the best....

I wish Yao would quit pulling a T-Mac, just STFU and get healthy.

Even if Yao could return in 6 months, it wouldnt be a good idea. He should just wait until 2010

I don't think anybody is going to rush Yao. I think a lot of that kind of talk is just trying to be optimistic about the situation. It's really important for someone like Yao to set a goal and work towards it and that's probably what they're doing already. In six months he may be saying it'll be three more months. Then there may be another three months. It's obviously going to take as long as it takes, but there is nothing wrong with him trying remain positive and set a goal to work towards.

I certainly didn't read this as returning to NBA action in 6 months. I think it is just getting back on the practice court to do some movement and shooting around.
