You are correct if you only take into considering Yao's own scoring. However, the counter argument is that by staying in the game an extra 5-6 minutes, Yao prevents the offensively inept Mutumbo from playing those minutes. Therefore allowing the offense to run much smoother during that time.
He also doesn't come out and show on pick and roll, so he's not moving very much at all out there. Many benefits: 1. Less fatigue 2. more minutes 3. fewer fouls 4. he has the energy to close out games.
It's obvious that Coach is doing test/experiment with different combinations in real games. He started from setting up Tmac early in the first few games. Now the focal point is Yao's role as pivot at both O and D. I guess we will see various looks he is trying to test with the rotation for the most of the first month. Well, that is what a good head coach should do, that is to fully understand the strength and weakness of your personnel and try to come up with a scheme that can maximize profit. I believe this is one of the most important quality Coach Adleman brought to this team. They need someone who understands their games. JVG should seriously consider becoming a top tier assistant coach again. Maybe incharge of Defense/Decipline etc. He could be a genius in that role.
http://www.nba.com/rockets/ Watch Adelman's post game video. Adelman says he's going to play yao 17+ min before resting more in the 3rd quarter, so he can be fresh in the 4th quarter. Looks like he has the same big minutes planned for yao in the future. Obviously, yao the most efficient player in the team and very valueable. I am alittle concerned with him wearing down in the playoffs, but hopefully the longer rest in the off season will negate that.
It's not less fatigue in this offense... the main thing that drains his energy is running up and down the court not pick and roll. Playing 38 mins per game is ridiculous... I just hope he doesn't get injured. I rather see a 30 mins Yao than an injured Yao sitting on the bench.
